1: Philis Wheatley was the first African American poet in America. She was abducted, sold, and then a slave. She was a believer in God and a poet from the bottom of her heart. With privileges most slaves didn't get, she wrote her way through life and did as told. In this book you will learn about Philis Wheatley's youth lifestyle/personal habits, and her death.

3: Philis Wheatley was born in about 1753 in Gambia/Senegal, Africa. When she was only a 7 years of age, she was kid-napped and brought to Boston, Massachusetts to be a slave. She didn't know what was going on but was taken away to Boston anyway. There she was bought by John and Susanna Wheatley. Luckily, they treated her with respect. She was given privileges most slaves weren't given. She was taught how to write and read by her owners and their children. Philis was an unknown poet from a young age. | Youth

4: Lifestyle and Personal Habits | Philis Wheatley believed in God, freedom, and the savior. She was a cautious slave that stayed out of trouble. Even in her poetry where she expressed her thoughts and feelings, she did her best to keep her thoughts of slavery quiet. Sometimes there would be slight complaints. She was quiet, honest, and brave. She also was humble and independent.

5: Death | Philis Wheatley died on December 5, 1784. This sad event took place in Boston, Massachusetts. It is said that she died from giving birth to a 3rd baby. She died as did her 3rd child soon after. Her hard life, feeble, fragile body, and her 3rd baby led her to her death. She died at an early age of 31. Tragically, the life of the first African-American poet to be published had been put to an end.
