 Next Stop Maui!
Checking out our digs for the next 2 weeks! It takes all day to read all the little sticky notes the housekeeper left for us... so many rules! But we're in Hawaii so who cares!! | Our favorite place to sit at the end of the day. Freddy taught us all to play 13 here on the deck. We ended up playing cards every day! Thanks Freddy! | Jason's other favorite place! He'd sleep all day if we let him!
Let's go to the beach! | " Hey mom! We made it to Hawaii. The beach is Awesome!"
 Is the water warm?... Yep!
We went to the beach every day. Mornings were always the best. The water was calmer and the snorkeling was great. Afternoons, the beach was busier and the wind kicked up. Evenings, the sunsets were amazing!
Breakfast at the Tasty Crust. A local hangout with the best coconut syrup... and milkshakes!
 Beach Time
 Freddy's first snorkeling trip
Freddy's First Day Snorkeling! | White-Spotted Damsel Fish (Alo'ilo'i) - Black and the Four Spot Butterfly Fish (Lau Hau) - Yellow | Rock Boring Sea Urchin ('ina) | Cometfish (nunu peke) | Dean took Freddy and Jason out to the reefs on Kamaole Beqch in front of our condo. Nice and close, with great snorkeling!
Freddy was so excited! His first trip into the water and a huge green sea turtle (Honu) swam right by him!
 The | Pool
Our days in Maui go something like this... 1. Wake up and have breakfast 2. Make lunches and head to the beach 3. Swim, Snorkel, Boogie board and Snorkel some more! 4. Walk and play on the beach looking for cool shells. 5. Back to the condo 6. Go play in the pool 7. Play cards (game of choice - 13. I bet Freddy is sorry he taught us this one! We catch on fast!), then make dinner. 8. Sunset walk on the beach or photo lesson with Dean so Freddy can learn to take the best sunset pictures! 9. Watch movies, read or play cards some more. 10. Go to sleep so we can do it all again tomorrow! It's hard work being on vacation!
Dean, Jason, Kathy, Kelsey, Terry and Freddy | (Ohana)
Dean likes to wait till just the right moment to take the picture!... Thanks Honey!
 Boogie Boarding!
One nice day to enjoy our new beach umbrella. We left it on the beach to hold our place for the evening on the 4th of July and it got blown away! Our sacrifice to the Gods of the Sea!
 Relax! | Big Waves
Fireworks were illegal on the beach and the only fireworks show was in town which would require sitting in really bad traffic for a couple of hours. We decided to stay at the condo and BBQ. The kids played football until security told them that playing sports on the grass was not allowed. Dinner was great! and the sunset after made a nice display! | Umm..... Fail!
I | I think something is wrong with Jason's face! | Freddy thinks he has a good hand! We'll just see about that! | The game takes a serious turn!
Road Trip! | Our trip mascot! Each time we got in the car to drive somewhere Dean played our trip theme song! "Come Along with Me" by Cee Lo Green and Vicci Martin | The | Breakfast at Charley's, Owned by Willy Nelson
Road To Hana | Freddy thought he wanted two pancakes... He's a growing boy, but that's a BIG pancake!
After a quick stop for breakfast, we filled up the gas tank, bought our Road to Hana CD and hit the road!
Yes, it does say Freddy Farmer!
It was a gorgeous sunny day when we left Charley's. By the time we got to our first stop on the Road to Hana, it looked like rain was headed our way!
 Wildlife in the tide pools.
 Overlooking Hanomanu Bay
 Ke'anae Penninsula
One minute it is sunny, the next it is raining like crazy! | Black Sand Beaches of Pailoa Bay
 Waianapanapa State Park
Waianapanapa State Park is a beautiful place to visit! We stopped here to see the black sand beaches, the lava tubes and land bridges created by old lava flow. There are even a couple of blow holes that shoot water way up into the sky. We stopped here for a picnic lunch and to give Jason's stomach a little time to rest. He was getting a little queasy from all the switch-backs on the highway.
We saw some Mongoose on our trip. Initially they were brought to Hawaii in the 1800's to control the rat population, Unfortunately after releasing them onto the islands, they realized that mongoose don't eat rat. Now they have two pests with no natural predators.... Oops!
 Wailua Falls
 Twin Falls | Makapipi Falls
No waterfall here but we found a pretty beach with lots of mosquitos.
52 Miles of tropical rain forest, 59 bridges and 620 turns in the road later, we arrive at Hana! The Ohe'o Gulch where the Seven Sacred Pools flow to the Ocean.
And the first thing everyone does when presented with a danger sign... is to walk past it... (just a little) and YES it really is a long way down!
It's said that if you swim in all seven pools you'll have good luck, but the water was running too fast for us to safely swim that day. And no swimming at this beach, it's known for its gray sharks.. no thanks! So we spent some time walking the trails and enjoying the waterfalls and bamboo forest. | Time Together
Time to head back home while there was still light to see the scenery on the way. We decided to drive "the back road" from Hana rather than turn around and drive the way we came. The road was a bit "rustic" in some places but it was a lot better than I thought it would be. Then as we were leaving Hana, we rounded the corner to see the most beautiful double rainbow.
Freddy and Dean make pancakes - need a good breakfast to get ready for a day at the beach!
Boat trip and Snorkeling Adventure! | We were so excited to get out in the ocean, to see how great the snorkeling would be... for about 10 minutes, then it turned into seasick central! Kelsey, Dean and Terry had a great time rolling with the waves on the boat while Freddy, Jason and I tried our best to keep our stomach from reintroducing everything we'd eaten all week. This was the longest boat ride of our lives!
Spinner Dolphins | On our way to the snorkeling site, the boat stopped to show us a pod of spinner dolphins. There were probably more than a hundred dolphins swimming around the boat. They'd jump out of the water, spinning in circles and dive back into the water. It was really cool! If we could just have stopped the boat from rocking it would have been even better!
About an hour later, We arrived at the | Jason | Dean | Kelsey & Jason | Kathy | Kathy | Lemon Tangs (Lau'ipala) | Moorish Idol (Kihikihi) | Whitemouth Moray Eel (Puhi)
snorkel location. It was nice to cool off in the water. It was a little murky so there was not a lot fish to see. | Jason made himself a nice little bed to rest in | Some were able to enjoy the light lunch provided by the crew | Poor Freddy was so sick he couldn't move. | Trying really hard not to be sick! | Kelsey had fun jumping with the waves as the boat went over them
So happy to be back on solid ground!
On the way back to the van we stopped at the little market set up in the shade of the banyan trees. Lots of handcrafted local items. A good place to cool off and get our land legs back!
 Walking around Kehei
Heading into Lahaina to see the aquarium and the Old Lahaina Luau.
 McKenna Beach
It was the most beautiful day to be at the beach. Crystal clear blue water was amazing. The waves were a bit crazy! I think every one of us got slammed by a wave at least once and we came home with pockets full of sand in our shorts! But once you were out past the wave break, it was nice to just float and enjoy the water and the surrounding scenery.
Grandpa Terry is working on his Karate Kid moves up on the cliff!
 I'm pretty sure that's Jason
 IAO Valley
One last snorkel before we have to go home!
Soaking up the last bit of sunshine with a picnic lunch at the beach, then it's on to the pool for the final rounds of 13!
Our lucky little girl gets to spend her birthday in Maui this year!
What an amazing vacation! After two weeks, Terry soaks up the last few rays of Maui sunshine before we have to get on the plane. Freddy was lucky enough to go home with a suntan!
