FC: 35 to 20 My Best Photographs - Volume One

1: For Darlyne...Without her, these photos would never have been possible. Photo taken May, 2008

2: On October 31st, 2011, Darlyne and I celebrated 19 wonderful and loving years of marriage and as a gift, she gave me an opportunity to share some of my photographs of my trip to China from which I had just returned. Given that I had posted those photos elsewhere on the internet, I decided to use what had been given to me to showcase what I consider to be my best or favorite photographs from our, or my solo travels across the globe from our first trip in 1996 to the beginning of 2011. These photographs began with a simple 35mm point and shoot camera Darlyne had when we were married and I used up until 2001. For our 9th Anniversary, Darlyne gave me my first advanced camera, a Canon Rebel G. It served me well until technology rendered film obsolete and I replaced it with a Canon digital 20D model. Hence, those cameras formed the name of this album - 35 to 20. These pictures tell a story of places we have been, sites we have seen, or activities we have done. They tell of distance places, historical events, different cultures, and most importantly, the journey of our lives together to this point in time. All of the photographs taken this album, expect one, were taken by me. Some of them were the result of deliberate framing while others happened just by luck. Regardless of how the photograph was set up, and what camera was used, what they all have in common is that they all turned out to be some of my best work.

3: I decided to create this project not as a way to say 'Ha ha, look where we went...' or, 'Look what we did...,'but rather as a way to show the world beyond what we recognize. It is also my way of encouraging those who look at this album to dream of exploring places that they may not know. All of the photographs were taken while I was far away from home. Some places could be reached and visited in just a day, while others took more than a day just to reach. Regardless of where the picture was taken, each is unique as the of the subject matter of the photograph. These 62 photographs reflect my growth as a photographer and traveler, and my understanding and appreciation for the world above and below me. Please keep in mind that the older photographs have been scanned from 35mm film and thus, may not be of the same quality as the original prints. Thank you for taking the time to look at and hopefully enjoy each picture. RD - November 2011 Back Cover - Approaching London off the Irish Coast at Sunrise, June, 2008
