S: 2009 - 2010 Africa Rally

Although only two members of COW crossed the finish of the 2009-2010 Africa Rally, it could not have happened without the help and generosity of so many! A Special Thanks to... Our gorgeous mothers Jill and Debby, Tim Chen, Connor Deeks, Brian Lee, the entire Gregson Family, Jillian Fagan, Pasha Golestaneh, Chael Sonnen, and Aaron and Carol Bell Our Sponsors Aomatsu Sushi & Grill, Trichter & Murphy, P.C.,Pico,Ultimate Team Spirit,Wieden + Kennedy, Millar's Hiway Tire Factory, Firebreak Spray Systems, Chaffey Dairy And everyone else who bought t-shirts, donated time and money, and followed us along the way!

On December 8, 2009, Tate Koenig and Keegan Warrington arrived in London England. In London they encountered their first "Speed Bump" on what turned out to be a long, bumpy adventure! | We faced challenges around every corner, including delayed ships, freak snow storms and Al Qaeda terrorists, we pushed through thanks greatly to the immense generosity and hospitality of the Gregson family. After crossing the Atlantic, the adventure was underway!

On December 13, 2009 Citizen Of the World's first team, one of three American teams and the youngest team participating by over 10 years, began the Africa Rally! | With the car on a boat around Mauritania and the Al Qaeda terrorists, and plans to meet it in Dakar Senegal on January 15, we bought some back packs and started on our way! Our first stop was Paris where we were able to meet up with Tate's friend since kindergarten Casey Gagliardi

Next stop was Barcelona Spain for Christmas, Tate's Birthday and New years! | Barcelona is where Tate and Keegan met now life long friends Luke Brossette, Sarah Powers, Alizé Carrre and Tim Arnold! Luke was a traveling photographer who was intrigued with COW and the Africa Rally and soon had booked flights to meet them in Senegal on January 14!

Then we entered Africa... | With everything from Snake Charmers to back flipping monkeys, Africa was all we had expected and then some! | After a quick stop in the beautiful Essauria, Morocco thanks to a recommendation by Tim Arnold, we were once again heading south!

Meeting up with our friends from New York Sarah Powers and Alizé Carrre whom we met in Spain, we now set out to cross the Atlas Mountains and see the Todra Gorge!

Into the desert where we learned just how uncomfortable sitting on a Camel for two days could be!

Luke made it to meet us in Dakar, Senegal on time but it would take almost 2 weeks to get our car through customs | While waiting for our car to get through customs Tate took on the locals in some beach wrestling

Although we made a lot of great friends while in Dakar we couldn't get on the road soon enough | When we got our car our bags were packed and we were on our way!

It didn't take long before we ran into car trouble | while broken down we learned monkeys love Top Ramen!

In Mali the roads where a bit rough and still being built in places but we were headed East!

Burkina Faso was the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and home to some of the most hospitable people I have ever met! They also practice polygamy...

As nice as the people were and as fun as crocodile fishing was we were ready to head South to wetter climates

The cheap food, sunny weather and sandy beaches combined to make Ghana our favorite place we visited!

In Ghana we parted ways with Luke as we left him with our new friend Pat!

As we crossed the rural mountain ranges of Togo we discovered mud castle villages who's inhabitants were more than entertained by our cars PA speaker.

Benin was all kinds of crazy but nothing compared to what lie ahead

We weren't "technically" allowed to drive through Nigeria..... | after forging a few documents, bribing our way through the borders and having to spend the night broken down in the bush we started to question our judgment...

Hot, Tired and Hungry we rolled into the capital Abuja at about 2 am and with a stroke of pure luck met Markus Truninger! With our car literally falling apart I went to work. Using Markus's shop, the rear main seal out of a broken down taxi, JB weld, hose clamps and a whole lot of zip ties we got the Samurai back on the road!

With the finish line in sight, we crossed the tropical jungles of Cameroon

On February 13, 2010, after over two months on the road, we arrived in Kribi, Cameroon and completed the 2009 -2010 Africa Rally!
