31: St. Maarten. Settled by Arawak Indians who arrived from South America. The Carib Indians followed later and gave the Island the name Soualiga, or land of sugar. Located in the northeastern Caribbean, the land is divided 60/40 between the French (St. Martin) and Dutch (St. Maarten), although the Dutch side has a larger population. Philipsburg is the Dutch Capital of St. Maarten with colonial architecture, historic buildings, wonderful shopping and sun swept beaches.

While the prehistoric Ciboney people from South America lived here as early as 1500 B.C., St. Thomas was established as a trading post by the Dutch West India Company in 1657. An unincorporated district, it is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is located in the eastern Caribbean, just east of Puerto Rico. It's 13 miles long by 4 miles wide.

49: Grand Turk. Taino Indians crossed over from Hispaliola between 500 and 800 A.D. followed by the Lucayan Indians between 1300 and 1500. Although Ponce de Leon discovered the Island in 1512, Spanish settlements began in 1766. Located about 675 miles southeast of Miami and 30 miles south of the Bahamas Grand Turk, just one of 40 Islands in the Turks and Caicos Island chain, sits at the eastern end.

50: Astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth in 1962. When his Friendship 7 spacecraft splashed down near Grand Turk, it put the tiny island on everyone's radar. It was also a missile tracking station for U.S. Military in the 50's.
