1: Shirley, Mom Ou, Dad Ou, Ou Lun, Helen, Livia, Paul, Gail, & Abigail enjoy authentic Peking duck for our first Chinese meal.. | Welcome to Beijing! June 17, 2011

2: We stayed in the Ou's office apartment right in Beijing - it was lovely! Below are some views out the windeow (hard to see in the smog, though!) | Before going out, we stopped at the local police station to register our presence.

3: First destination: Tiananmen Square | Mao-soleum | Great Hall of the People

5: The Forbidden City June 18

6: JinShan Park (a long hike up to a great view!)

7: Beijing Business District and dinner at the Golden Jaguar | The Pants | The Egg

8: "Suzhou Street" | Cixi's Summer Palace | June 19

9: A performance at Cixi's theater!

10: We tried some Chinese "American food" at a Pizza Hut (lots of new topping options, including lots of seafood!) and then took our first of 3 overnight train rides, this one to the ancient city of Xi'an. | Xi'an

11: Huaqing Hot Springs | June 20 | The Romeo and Juliet poem of ancient China

12: Regional specialty - "bang-bang noodles" | One of the farmers who discovered the warriors | Finally - the terra cotta warriors! | Working archeologists | Dumpling Dinner! | A fantastic dinner theater

13: International Horticulture Expo | Tuesday, June 21

14: The Wall of Xi'an | And a really good "Chinese Muslim" meal!

15: When we arrived, our tour guide gave us some time to photograph Nanjing, but we couldn't see the city through all the fog! By the time we climbed to the top of the Sun Yat Sen memorial, we could see a little bit more. | Our second overnight train ride; we could see rice paddies and collective farms out the window. | Nanjing (June 22)

16: Downtown Nanjing | A fancy mall, lychees, Confucius "temple" and a chance to play hymns at the hotel.

17: June 23: we left Nanjing with our new tour guide, and drove to Suzhou. After a poor lunch (the one bad meal we had in China- the pork still had hair!), we spent the day wandering through the old town and the beautiful gardens.

20: June 25: Suzhou Silk Factory #1 and on to Shanghai! | An evening boatride, an acrobatics show, and a Shanghai nightlife stroll.

21: Shanghai: the new and the old

22: June 26: Peter Zhao gave us a wonderful tour of Shanghai's aquarium, dimsum and the Pearl Tower.

23: And then one final train ride, back to Beijing. This was a new train station and newer train as well - we all had a very nice rest!

24: Sunday, June 26th After a quick breakfast and brief rest, we went to Yuan Ming Yuan Park to see the ancient ruins (and Lily festival) and then to the Olympic Park.

25: China's only water fountain!

26: June 26th:Ou Lun enjoyed her hot pot, while we all ate huge bowls of Chinese fast food (rice and meat) for lunch.

27: The Temple of Heaven (site of the Emperor's annual sacrifice) | Dinner with Ken Rutt! | Parking on the sidewalks!

28: Abigail's 15th Birthday! | We also celebrated Livia's 11th birthday, a few days early

29: Old Beijing (the Hutongs)

30: All through the trip, we met people who wanted a picture with Livia (and sometimes with the rest of us!)

31: After our bike tour of the hutong, we took a guided (Chinese) tour of Prince Gong's estate, and then had lunch at one of the Ou's favorite traditional Beijing diners. After the big birthday dinner at the Golden Jaguar, we stopped to see the Ous' apartment. | A dessert tray full of bean treats!! | Ou Lun's room

32: The Great Wall | June 29

33: Mrs. Ou (with Shirley translating) taught us to stuff dumplings, a final stroll in the neighborhood, the hospital Gail was thankful to avoid, coolest toll booth anywhere, and a very crowded airport. | June 30 Our final day; Livia made dragon fruit juice, Abigail helped make dumplings, Livia and Helen played in the closet... | Zai Jian!
