S: Italy Anniversary Trip 2012

FC: Italy 2012

On October 3, 2012, we set out for the trip of a lifetime to celebrate our 15th anniversary in Italy. From October 4 through October 15, we spent 11 glorious days in Rome, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and Tuscany. We had dreamed about this trip for years and it exceeded our every expectation. It was a trip we will never forget. This book is our story in pictures.

Our plane landed in Rome around 7 in the morning. We were very tired after flying all night but very excited to finally be in Italy. Our only disappointment was when the customs officials waved us through without stamping our passports. We wanted that stamp! We checked into the Albergo del Senato, a beautiful, boutique hotel literally at the front step of the Pantheon. | Rome Thursday, October 4

Built in 126 AD, the Pantheon is Rome's best preserved ancient structure. It is faced by the Piazza della Rotonda, directly in front of our hotel.

 The Pantheon

The Church of San Luigi dei Francesi was one of our favorites. It is the French church in Rome with an amazing Caravaggio chapel.

 T r e v i F o u n t a i n

 Basilica di San Pietro

 The Vatican Museums

Sistine Chapel | The Sistine Chapel closes the tour to the Vatican Museum. The glorious ceiling is no doubt Michelangelo's masterpiece. It took 4 years to complete (1508-12) and has taken over 20 years of meticulous cleaning to restore it to its original glory.. We must have stared at it for almost an hour.

Piazza Navona One of the prettiest piazzas in Rome

 Colosseum

Foro Romano | The Roman Forum was the heart of ancient Rome. We spent a fascinating afternoon exploring its stately ruins

 Palatine Hill

 The Spanish Steps

Borghese Gallery Our favorite museum in Rome--the Berninis and Canova were amazing

We could probably do a whole book just on the incredible food we ate in Italy. In Rome, we had amazing fresh seafood, pizza, and pasta. We discovered the wonders of buffalo mozzarella as well. And the wine! These are a few of our favorites, starting with La Rosetta, not only our favorite restaurant in Rome, but one of our favorites ever. Seafood extraordinaire!

Pierluigi was another amazing seafood restaurant located in the beautiful Piazza Ricchi.

Le Volte--best pizza we had ever eaten Grom--best gelato in the world!

 Firenze

In Florence, we stayed at the St. Regis Hotel. It was a spectacular property for an anniversary trip.

 Il Duomo

 Santa Maria Novella

 Santa Croce

 Siena

 San Gimignano

San Gimignano is known for its medieval "skyscrapers."

The day was a little rainy, but it didn't dampen our spirits at all!

We enjoyed a delicious wine tasting at Tenuta Torciano.
