6: Lactobacillus acidophilus(Latin meaning acid-loving milk-bacterium) is a species in the genus Lactobacillus. L. acidophilus is a homofermentative species, fermenting sugars into lactic acid, and grows readily at rather low pH values (below pH 5.0) and has an optimum growth temperature of around 37 C.L. acidophilus occurs naturally in the human and animal gastrointestinal tract and mouth.Some strains of L. acidophilus may be considered to have probiotic characteristics. These strains are commercially used in many dairy products, sometimes together with Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricusin the production of acidophilus-type yogurt.



9: Lactobacilli are commonly associated with plant herbage. They have a generation time ranging from 25 minutes to several hundred minutes, and grow optimally between the temperatures of 30 and 40 degrees Celsius, although thermophilic strains can be comfortable at temperatures as high as 60 degrees Celsius. They are also commonly associated with the gastrointestinal tract of animals and humans. As natural GI microflora they are believed to perform several beneficial roles including immunomodulation, interference with enteric pathogens, and maintenance of healthy intestinal microflora.Lactobacillus gasseri appears to be the main species of lactobacilli that inhabits the human gastrointestinal tract.


11: L.acidophilus produces lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Bacterocins are "antibiotic-like" substances and bactercidal proteins. However, they are not antibiotics, as is frequently claimed in promotional literature for lactobacilli and other lactic acid productin bacteria. L. acidophilus (and L. lactis) have been shown to produce enough hydrogen peroxide to inhibit the growth of the S. aureus micropathogen, even at temperatures as low as 5 degrees C. However, L. acidophilus require folic acid and riboflavin, two B vitamins, to produce hydrogen peroxide. If either of these vitamins is in too short of a supply, to will effect the ability of the lactobacilli to produce this agent. However, riboflavin deficiencies are very rare. Other antimicrobial substances lactobacilli are believed to synthesize include acetic acid and benzoic acid.

12: Lactobacillus is one of several microorganisms interacting with the immunocompetent cells of the bowel. Recent studies show that Lactobacillus bulgaricus from yogurt has a strong binding affinity for OKT4+ and OKT8+ cells. This affinity may be comparable to L. casei, which is also endowed with immunomodulating capacities. Cytoadherence occurs in the presence of T cells (both T4+ and T8+ subsets). Evidence also suggests lactobacilli compete for the same environment with gram-negative bacteria in theintestinal tract (i.e. Escheria coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Clostridium perfringens, Shigella species, and Staphylococcus aureus). Presumably, optimal levels of lactobacilli in the gut would prevent colonization, and hence disease, due to these pathogens.

13: L. acidophilus can be found in many natural health stores and grocery stores around the country. It is primarily found in 470-1000 mg capsules, 2.5 billion-14 billion live cells of bacteria. The natural health industry claims that L. acidophilus is a probiotic or 'friendly' organism that helps the body fight disease and restore health. There are an enormous amount of health claims associated with taking L. acidophilus , these claims vary from relieving constipation to killing deadly strains of E.coli and Salmonella. I will focus on L. acidophilus effect on vaginal yeast infections, the immune system and GI system. Many health food stores and manufacturers claim that taking regular doses of acidophilus or eating yogurt high in L. acidophilus will decrease the presence of vaginal yeast infections in women. Research findings are inconsistent and few in numbers. It is known that L. acidophilus is already present in the vagina of healthy women and important in maintaining pH. However, it is not known if eating products high in L. acidophilus or taking acidophilus tablets have an effect on microflora of the vaginal tract.

14: Dairy Industry There are many types of fermented dairy products that use L. acidophilus . The most familiar to Americans are sweet acidophilus milk and yogurt. Sweet acidophilus milk is consumed by individuals who suffer from lactose maldigestion and intolerance, a condition that effect approximately 75% of the worlds population. Maldigestion and intolerance occurs when enzymes (lactase) cannot break down lactose or milk sugar in the intestine. Failure to digest lactose results in discomfort, cramps and diarrhea. Sweet acidophilus milk is made by inoculating milk with the L. acidophilus bacteria. After inoculation, the milk sets for 24 hrs. and yields a type of buttermilk that has a low content of lactose. L. acidophilus is also used in the preparation of yogurt. L. acidophilus along with other lactic acid bacteria are added to milk to decrease the pH. When milk becomes acidic, proteins in the milk break down and coagulate to form a gel.


16: Helps Prevent Candida - A Yeast Infection in the Female Vagina Another health benefit of taking a Lactobacillus acidophilus supplement is, it can help control the population of Candida albicans. Once this fungus grows out of control, it can cause a yeast infection in the vagina known as Candida. Lactobacillus acidophilus is naturally found in the female vagina. It helps keep the population of Candida albicans in check. But, using spermicides and contraceptive creams can kill this "good" bacteria. Too little, and the results can be Candida.

Since it helps maintain the natural balance of microorganisms in your intestinal tract, Lactobacillus acidophilus can also help people who suffer from Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Crohn's disease. Lactobacillus acidophilus can even help lower the amount of cholesterol present in your blood. And, it can reduce the risk of Colon Cancer.

21: My adopt microbe name was lactobacillus acidophilus, this microbe have some probiotic characteristics that help the human to control their health. One of the function of this microbe was L. acidophilus can help maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora by increasing acidity of the intestine and killing off harmful bacteria. From this small creature, many things that I have learned in order for me to improve my life. The microbe must be in large quantities in order to function and help the human in their health, all the lactobacillus acidophilus will work together. This situation same goes to us, our work will be much easier if we do it together with our team members and all of our members participate in doing the work. Even though this microbe was very small, but it gives a lot of benefits to the human. When I read through all the articles and story about this microbe, I was very surprised because the process was very complicated and complex but it work very fast and smoothly. Last but not least, although my college has many activities but I really enjoy making this scrapbook because from this scrapbook I can learned and read more about the microbes.

23: I was born on 23 February 1995 and I was the fifth children in my family members. My siblings consist of 6 boys and 4 girls. My father works as a businessman and my mother helps my father with his work. Currently, my first sister works as a bank officer in Taiping, my second sister now still searching for a job after she had graduated from UTeM, Melaka in Bachelor of Electronic Engineering, the third one was my brother and he is studying in Kuala Kangsar at the Kolej Islam Sultan Azlan Shah(KUISAS). The forth was my sister and she is studying in UTP, Perak in Bachelor of Chemical Engineering. The fifth was me, studying in UPM, Selangor in Bachelor of Science Microbiology. The sixth and seventh was my brother. Both of them were in boarding school, the sixth is studying at MRSM Parit, Perak and the seventh is studying at Sekolah Menengah Sains Teluk Intan, Perak which was also my school previously. The eigth was my cute little sister, she was very independent because she was the only one who wanted to go to religious school in Kelantan. The ninth was my brother which studying in primary school located near my house and the last one was my youngest brother that study also in primary school but at Kelantan because he lives with his aunt. I was very thankful because my mother and father had raised all of us until we succeed in our life. After SPM, I was offered by the UPM to join the fast track programme for only 8 months and then I can continue my study in degree in young age which is 18 years old and now here I am, enjoying and working for my life as a Bachelor Science of Microbiology student with my awesome lecturer, Dr Wan Zuhainis and my friends.
