16: The Morning Sounds of Melaque Always the waves: repetitive, thunderous, powerful, smashing, explosive! Early morning – well before dawn: roosters: the ruckus of roosters: ruck-us: probably blend of ruction and rumpus. Roosters and chickens are scattered about the area - definitely surround sound! Each cock-a-doodle-doo attempting to summon the dawn; each early crowing – is a wakeup call attempting to be louder than the other; kikirikí, ki-kiri-ki, kikirikí, ki-kiri-ki and it goes on-and-on! Birds: Great-tailed Grackles are noisy, and gregarious birds, that make a variety of squeaks, whistles, and croaks. Their typical song is a guttural readle-eak accompanied by high-pitched, clear whistles - sounding like a rusty gate."Chewink Chewink" to a more complex "Ooo whew, w hew, whew, whew, whew" call that gets faster and faster and ends with a loud "Cre-whew-whew!" Occasionally, the braying of the donkey: hee-Haw, hee-Haw, hee-Haw: The intake of breath and the outflow of air both produce a vocalization, which is usually sounded out as hee Haw. In actuality, the intake is a deep EEEEEE and the out-voice is a broken Aww aww noise. The Gas truck: The gas truck plays (over speaker) perhaps a bar of music and announces “g-a-s” which sets ALL the dogs in the neighborhood to barking!!! Dogs – lots of dogs: barking, yapping, a full out donnybrook! Little dogs are often kept for parts of their day on roof tops. The Water truck: makes the Tarzan call; although it does not quite sound like Johnny Weissmuller. Fresh fruit truck: just plays loud!
