- Paul Morand | “To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson | "I'm a wanderer, I have no place or time, I'm just drifting on this lonely road of mine, If you like you can come along with me, But I promise you that I am not the man I used to be." ~ Marc Broussard

Milwaukee, WI - Atlanta, GA - Madrid, Spain - Valladolid, Spain | At this point in time I had no idea I had just begun the trip that would change my life | Arrival in Spain

The place where we were dropped off, La Feria, happens to be about a block away from where I'll be staying this semester, so once Leah (my roommate) and I met Maria Antonia (our host mom), we walked back to our apartment (Leah and I were pretty jet-lagged at this point), and got to take a look around the flat. To our surprise (mine and Leah's, really), there is another foreign person staying at our place too! I'm not sure how long Navi will be with us, but she has proven to be quite entertaining! She's from Portugal, and to my knowledge, fluently speaks Portuguese, English, and Spanish. I've seen her write stuff in Japanese and Arabic??? but I honestly don't know if she knows those languages too...I wouldn't be surprised if she did. Because of her, today both Leah and I learned a new word....Rastas, which are dreadlocks! Most of Navi's hair are rastas, but not all of it. I like to think of her as a free bird. She lives wherever on whatever (that's how she learned how to use chop sticks...she ate corn today by picking off the each kernel with them), and seems to make friends easily. While I don't always understand her (I'm never quite sure when she switches into another language until a few words in), I enjoy trying to! Mi "mama," Maria Antonia, is possibly one of the nicest people I've met her. Her patience with our poor language skills is astounding! She corrects me whenever I need correction (which has been A LOT the past day or two), explains new words and concepts thoroughly, and she slows her speaking down for us as well, as we're not quite up to snuff with the natives. She works in un viñedo (vineyard) with one of her hijas (daughters) and is a good cook! She has another daughter (who is in Madrid for school) and a son, Luis, quien vive aqui con nosotras. Everything here is going well so far, but we're only a few days into the trip. I'm hoping that by next week, I won't have to concentrate as hard as I've had to the past few days with listening. It's a lot harder than I thought it would be! But all in due time, no?

“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” – Robert Louis Stevenson | At "El Aire" with Katie, Andrea, and Kelsey celebrating one of our 1st weekends in Spain | At my host mom's "viñedo" (con Ma. Antonia y Beatriz, La Seca) | Valladolid

 Segovia

 Burgos

Barcelona | I really love being in Barcelona. The people here are super nice. I'm fascinated by the fact that there are 3 main languages people speak here (Catalán, Spanish, and English). I love getting the chance to be back in a modern city (Valla is very old school). And I'm really liking the fact that Barca beat Atlético Madrid 3 - 0 tonight (hat trick by Messi, of course! Lo siento, Inaki, pero, ¿qué pasaó con tu equipo? jajaja) Hopefully tomorrow well be seeing Segrada Familia and Ill be getting to meet up with Francesco. Its been about 2 years since we've seen each other, and it'd be good to catch up, especially since I'm in HIS city now!

Lisbon, Portugal | Close your eyes. Imagine you're in a long room. Everything is dark and the room itself is moving. You realize you're absolutely freezing, even after you had put on your warmest layers. Knowing you only have a few hours to sleep before the day starts, you try to fall asleep, yet it is difficult to do because you are too cold and your seat is anything but comfortable. Then suddenly, before you know it, there are men (which remind you of gestapo) walking quickly through this room you're resting in, shining flashlights in everyone's eyes. As they approach you, you can hear them saying something, but you're not sure what language it's in. Before you know it, they are a row away from your group. You can finally pinpoint what language the men are speaking - Portuguese. And what, you think, are they asking for? They, this time, look directly at your friends (who are in the surrounding seats), and yell "Passaporte!" You register this as "Passport!,"grab it out of your backpack, which is situated on the floor between your feet, and wait for them to look at your passport. Meanwhile, in your groggy state, you look over at your friend, Andrea, who is getting her passport checked. Instead of just looking at her main passport picture, the men begin filing through her passport looking for something. A visa perhaps? They give her her passport back, then move on to you. Flashlight light blazing in your eyes, you hand them your passport, having marked the pages with photos of you with your fingers. To your surprise, they only look at the first photo, hand you your passport, and move on to the next people. Within a few minutes, the men are gone, but you're room still isn't moving. There you are, awake in the dark, not sure what's going on. Soon enough though, you're moving again, and before you know it, there is sunlight shining through the windows. Looking out the window, you get your first glimpse of Portugal. And although it looks very run down and extremely poor, there is something about this place that lets you know everything will be alright. This, my friends, is where my adventure in Portugal began.

Recordar y VOLVER. | Paolo Nutini - These Streets ~ *Vallarna - Tienes Unos Ojos Niña ~ Bacilos - Caraluna ~ Shakira - Gitana ~ Juanes - Tres ~ *Celtas Cortos - 20 de abril ~ Don Omar - Danza Kuduro
