1: How We Got Engaged ~ 2/21/11 "The Story of the Proposal" written by Jeff, the Groom-to-Be Because I orchestrated this event (the proposal), I, Jeff Fraser, will dictate this portion of "Our "Engagement Party Guestbook." At the onset, I will say that I do not profess to be a "planner," to be "event-oriented," or anything of that nature. I am very simple, easy to please, and as Jennie often puts it "too laid-back and stress-free." Because I lack the above referenced qualities, Jennie never saw my proposal coming, which ultimately made it that more special. About a month before I proposed, I approached my parents and Jennie's parents to alert them of my intentions. These "meetings" were separate, but yielded similar results. Each side felt that we worked well together as a unit and granted me their blessings. However, Jennie's dad reserved his blessing until the night of the proposal. This is his little girl after all, so it was very understandable. I told both sets of parents that I had a small plan to surprise Jennie. Expectantly, both mothers took the role as co-planners. Thus, the throwing Jennie off plan went into effect. For me, it was easy. I just had to act exactly how I always act (somewhat indifferent to the idea of marriage). Jennie's mom went into "Jeff is not committed mode" and consistently threw Jennie off all the way to the point where she was actually considering a job in Atlanta. It was all in good fun. The pivotal reason why Jennie was so thrown off was because I proposed a week after both Valentine's Day and our Anniversary. As she knows I am not a good planner, so she was CERTAIN that I was going to propose on one of these two days. I even took her on our Anniversary to Bahama Breeze, the location of our first date. When I did not propose on either of these days, she went home expressed to her mom in a defeated tone "I give up" (her mother told me this a day later, and we both shared a laugh). As for the "plan," I wanted to have a dinner where both families would be present and I would make a small presentation to both sides of why I want to ask for Jennie's hand in marriage and to again ask for their blessings. I told Jennie that we were having a dinner at the Renaissance for my cousin Mark because he received a promotion at work (not true). Present at the dinner were Jennie's mom, dad, her brother Lionel, and her Aunt Belina (as representative of the rest of her family). On my side - My mom, my dad, my cousin Mark, my Aunt Dell, my Aunt Hope, and my Uncle Rudy. So when Jennie and I walked into the private dining room at the hotel, she was surprised to see her brother filming her. She later told me it was at that point she knew what was going on, but was in a state of shock. I then proceeded to ask her parents and her aunt for their blessings. Sorry I forgot about Lionel initially because he was hidden behind the camera (shout out to Lionel who did a great job on the camera and MC!). I then proceeded to my family and asked for similar blessings and portrayed to them how lucky I am to have been blessed with such a wonderful woman like Jennie. I then proceeded to my now wife-to-be, got on one knee and asked for her hand. She said "yes," and I placed a corsage and ring on her hand, making her queen of the night. Jennie and I then sat down with the rest of our family and ordered from menus that had "Congratulations Jeff and Jennie on your Engagement." We shared laughs, cake, and a few Indian traditions. Our parents completed the evening by surprising us with a limo to take us to Hollywood Beach and to cap off an unforgettable night. “Her Response” written by Jennie, the Bride-to-Be The proposal was definitely a surprise and was more than I had ever dreamed of. I look forward to spending the rest of my life with Jeff who values family as much as I do. Not only did Jeff ask for my parents' blessings at least one month prior to our engagement, but he asked again in front of an audience and video camcorder. I can only imagine the amount of pressure/anxiety he must have endured that night, but nevertheless, it did not show. He knew what he wanted and acted accordingly. I was in a state of shock for most of the night, and then felt like I was on "Cloud 9" (what a wonderful feeling). I could definitely tell you that Jeff had it all planned. I honestly expected Jeff to propose to me at Bahama Breeze on our anniversary, and was disappointed when he did not (but did not tell him until we were engaged). If I were to tell a story of "the dream proposal" it would be the story of Jeff and my proposal.
