S: 2011 part 1
BC: The End
FC: the first half of the year | 2011
The family is the first essential cell of human society. Pope John XXIII
Ukrainian Christmas It was just Mama, Sofi, and Yasya this year. Tato worked hard making the borsht before he left for work, though. The girls anxiously waited for the sun to set before opening their gifts - Winky the sock alien for Yasya and giant plush blood cells for Sofi.
We asked Sofi what she thought President Obama should say in the State of the Union Address.. She said, "He will say, 'Treat all people like they're your pets. Treat them goodly.'" | "I like blood." | "Sometimes - if we get an animal that we don't know what it is - we stick it with the panda." | "Let's put tights on Guinness and then we'll eat him."
"We are friends forever and ever and ever! We are friends forever and ever and ever! We are friends forever and ever and EVER!"
Some girls sleep with dolls. Others sleep with Teddy bears. Sofi sleeps with a red blood cell.
Sledding in our flat, hill-less backyard takes teamwork and determination - two things Sofi and Yasya excel at.
 Snow is very distracting.
All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better. Ralph Waldo Emerson
There will be little rubs and disappointments everywhere, and we are all apt to expect too much; but then, if one scheme of happiness fails, human nature turns to another; if the first calculation is wrong, we make a second better: we find comfort somewhere . . . Jane Austen
Yasya's class at Thunderbird was preparing for their field trip to Country Donuts. They would help make the donuts, chat with the owners, and then each take one donut back to school and eat it. Problem: Yasya can't eat donuts from Country Donuts. So, as her parents, we had a few choices: 1-keep her home that day, 2-torture her by surrounding her with donuts but not let her eat any of them, 3-make Yasya-safe donuts at home and send those with her. We chose option #3. Yasya, showing excellent cooking skills, helped mix them, cut, and sprinkle them. They were not only Yasya-safe, they were also delicious!
The proud cook with her donuts and donut holes.
"Don't worry. If the lights go out again, I can use this stick to find Yasya!"
Keeping busy during the blizzard wasn't hard to do. A little game of dinosaur Go Fish kept the brain active and off snow. "Do you have any carnivores?" "No. Only herbivores. Go fish!"
In good weather, it usually took Alex 7-10 minutes to get home from work. That night it took over an hour and a half to get home, then 20 more minutes just to get into the driveway. Fun times. By morning, we could barely even see where the car had ended up.
When life gives you blizzards, make pancakes.
Sofi was determined to get the car out for Tato (his crazy boss wanted him to come in early). With a little help, she was successful.
Sofi loved all the snow: jumping in it, falling in it, being thrown in it, getting stuck in it. Yasya - not so much. She kept screaming, "Help! I suck!" and "Snow is NOT my favorite!"
Families are like fudge - mostly sweet with a few nuts. ~Author Unknown
Annual Snow Sculpting Competition in Lake Geneva, WI
""If I want to knock a story off the front page, I just change my hairstyle."" — Hillary Rodham Clinton | As much as I love the sound of screaming, the morning routine of Yasya howling as I brushed her long, magical hair was starting to get to me. Something had to be done. Something drastic . .. | Because we expected her to be upset about the haircut, Yasya was thrilled. First she said she looked like Nana, then switched to telling everyone she looks like Dora the Explorer. Sofi hated it. She screamed, "Keep Yasya away from me! She is not my sister any more; she is a monster!"
"Psst....Mama.... my sister is an alien." ~Sofi | "When I was a baby alien, I slept in a baby alien cradle." ~Yasya
Just like every other year, on February 11th, Nana had a birthday. So predictable. This year, though, Sofi was in charge of the cake. Well, cakes....plural. She topped four Ding Dongs to commemorate Nana's 1,036th anniversary of her birth. Nana sure is looking good for her age! I would have guessed she is closer to 66!
Although Yasya is not currently enrolled in gymnastics classes ("nastics days"), she does continue to practice at home -sometimes with a sword - in hopes of someday becoming a musketeer. Sofi, being slightly more grounded in reality, is moving along with her hockey skills and loving every minute of it. She'll even put on full hockey padding to watch cartoons. I'm sure the Chicago Blackhawks keep their gear on when they watch tv, too . . . | sports
A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty. ~Author Unknown
Discovery Center Children's Museum in Rockford, IL Fun With Tato Day
The best part of doing lapbooks is the pride on the girls' faces when they finish. Yasya shared her "Going on a Bear Hunt" lapbook with Bacon. He was really impressed. | This years Italien Dinner fundraiser for church was such a mix of emotions. The girls were thrilled to see their best friends - we were even seated next to Yasya's best friend Kinga and her cool family - and I was very happy to chat away with my friends. But then Yasya choked on an ice cube during Fr. Steve's speach and our friend Rose had to do the Heimlich. It was very scary, but I feel very blessed to have a nurse as a friend. | Best Friends
Mini Mollys & co. | Mini Molly circa 2005
This year's workshops were "Claws and Jaws" and "Predator and Prey" both focusing on characteristics of Cretaceous dinos from Africa discovered by Dr. Paul Sereno.
PaleoFest 2011 Burpee Museum Rockford, IL | The Giants of Africa special exhibit was amazing! Sofi loved seeing Jobaria, Suchomimus, Nigersaurus, and all the other cool new dinosaurs.
The Thunderbird Train Ride Field Trip When I told him Yasya's train trip was coming up, Alex immediately stated, "I get to go with her!" Not sure which one was more excited - Tato or Yasya. The day finally arrived cold and wet, but that didn't matter. They both had a great time. | "My teacher Mrs. Altshuler is better than a train."
Woo Woo! | "You can't see my eyes!" | Clickety Clack Going to the city and we're coming right back!
In Just- spring when the world is mud- luscious the little lame baloonman whistles far and wee and eddieandbill come running from marbles and piracies and it's spring when the world is puddle-wonderful the queer old baloonman whistles far and wee and bettyandisbel come dancing from hop-scotch and jump-rope and it's spring and the goat-footed baloonMan whistles far and wee -e.e.cummings
March 31, 2011 | I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.
 The Party!
EASTER | The Easter Bunny hopped over to Maple St with geeky t-shirts, dinosaur claws, Barbie dresses, and ABC books. Eggs were hidden, found, and generously shared. It was a good Easter.
"The Easter Cow's gonna bring me a Russian farmer with two legs." ~Yasya
Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Her continuing mission to explore new planets, to seek out new civilizations, to boldly go where no Yanevskyy has gone before.
Ah, Spring - a time for joy and drunk cats.
Thunderbird Dairy Farm Field Trip | This year Alex got to go to the dairy farm. I'm not sure whether Yasya was more excited about seeing the cows or getting to take Tato with her. Of course, she wasn't thrilled about the bugs.
"Mama! All the baby cows hatched from their eggs!"
Fancy Hats for All! | We celebrated the royal wedding (Wills Hearts Kate!) with our fanciest hats and dresses plus tea and butterfly sandwiches. Yasya changed her dress three times. | The Royal Wedding
"Mooom, I left the gate open on accident and Yasya got out!" | "WHAT?!?! Spring break is over already? I thought it was supposed to last all spring! How many more days of school to do I have to get through? Do I have to do 100 days of school AGAIN? I just want to stay home and be happy with Nana." | "Mom, Yasya is cleaning the toilet. That's her hobby." | "Mom, I want a princess bedroom with only science things." | "I don't care if you're not going to church; I am! I will get myself dressed." | "Mom, velociraptors couldn't have been Chicago Bears fans. They didn't know how to spell Chicago back then." | Sofi just woke up from her nap and the first thing she said was, "How many wings does a fish have, Mom?" | "She needs to eat really, really not this." | "The problem is that all the smartness drained out of my brain. Then we read the books and the smartness came back and now I feel better." | "I love Guinness. He's better than a dog because he tells me what to do. He's my commander."
"Moooom, Sofi was talking too much and that broke my banana!" | "I want to watch Star Trek because Star Trek is awesome and I am really awesome." | "I want to be the most awesome things in the world. I gonna be a pirate and a musketeer and a dinosaur and a turtle and a pirate. | "I don't like my toes any more. I think we need cut my foot off." | We were talking about the situation in Libya during dinner when Yasya chimed in, "I don't like Libya. I only like Max." | "I like him. [Spock] That one is me. And Captain Kirk is Guinness." | "Mama, big girls are strong, but little boys are not strong." | "My finger ruined my whole life!"
