18: Pros' Trophy 23rd September 2013 | The 2013 Emirates Golf Club Professionals' Day produced a fabulous turnout of over 120 players. In very warm and humid conditions the Academy Professionals played alongside the members in a shamble format over the championship Majlis course. The team shamble format with the best two scores from four and some input from the Professionals pulled in some great team scoring. Taking the top honours was the team of Alan Salem, Soumaya Salem, Marc Charlet and Rabih Sfeila with a fabulous score of 27 under par 117. For their success they won a four-ball to play at the world famous Open Championship venue, Carnoustie in Scotland Winning a four- ball to play at AlMouj Golf, The Wave Muscat and coming a close second with a great score of 25 under par 119 was the team of Alex Kim, Patrick Mulligan, Suresh Shewakramani and Qamar Rasheed. The team in third place and winning a brunch for four at M's was Dr Abdulla Al Karam, Haris Michaelides, Stathis Stahis and Gurbax Singh with a 24 under par 120. The nearest the pin competition on hole 7 was won by Nelly Amarnani and hole 11 by Vijay Devanani. Both players have won exclusive playing lessons with a Professional. It was a pleasure for the Professionals to play alongside so many members and see their skills in action and witness some great golf and interaction. Special mention must go to Mark Donovan who struck a hole-in-one ace on the par 3 4th hole with a sweetly struck eight iron. Mark achieving his first ever Hole-in-One, in celebration rang the bell to the approval of the members!

26: The 2013-2014 season officially teed off with 128 members competing in a 4-ball team shamble competition. The day commenced with the traditional ceremonial tee shot from the incoming captain. Past Captain Moshe Kohli handed the reins and the Captain's green jacket to Dick Purchase who. despite the pressure of 128 pairs of eyes on him, dispatched his tee shot 234 yards down the first fairway. Ian Scott guessed the yardage exactly and won a bottle of champagne. Unfortunately Barbara Head, the new Lady Captain, could not make this event but she did officially start the Ladies' Season Opener the following Monday. The quartet of Alan Salem, Soumaya Salem, Marc Charlet and Rabih Sfeila followed their victory in the Pros' Day two weeks earlier with another triumph, this time by a three shot margin. Moshe Kohli, Ramesh Prabhakar, Surabhi Prabhakar and Baraj Singh Kohli produced an excellent score of 120 to take runners-up place. One shot further back and in third was the team of Martha Wong, Bill Wong, Naima Maya and Tej Chabra. Bill Wong recorded a fabulous Hole-in-One on the 178-yard par three fifteenth hole, a tremendous effort on arguably the hardest short hole on the course. Bill also rang the bell in the spike bar during the prize giving, kindly offering each one of his fellow members a celebratory drink. Also in the prizes were Surabhi Prabhakar, Rosemary Turlik, Patrick Mulligan and Bill Wong for their accuracy on the nearest the pin prize holes. 36: Junior Series First Event: 31st October 2013 | Dubai Golf hosted the first Junior Tournament Series event of the season on Thursday 31st of October. The event was played over Emirates Golf Club’s 9-hole Academy Course and was made up of a strong field of 40 budding junior golfers. The event is the first of an eight tournament series and is part of an initiative by the Dubai Golf Academy Professionals to encourage junior golfers to move from the driving range to the golf course. Between the two Dubai Golf Academies at Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek and Yacht Club, over 500 Juniors participate in regular weekly lessons as part of the Dubai Golf Junior Development Programme sponsored by Jumeirah and Wild Wadi Waterpark. Juniors in each of the five programme levels competed against one another and each level was highly contested. Winners received vouchers for Wild Wadi Waterpark in addition to valuable order of merit points. The weather and course conditions were perfect, which added to some fantastic scoring and a great start to the Dubai Golf Junior Series. The buzz between the competitors was electric and you could clearly sense the nervous tension before tee off. The nerves soon settled as the juniors started to focus on the task at hand. Many of the parents acted as caddies and did a great a job in supporting their kids and the event. Event one was a huge success and we look forward to the second event which takes place on November 29th at Dubai Creek. | Yellow 1.Tobias Lundgren 45 2.Krishna Kakar 52 Blue 1.David Polo 46 2.Tom Rietiens 52 | Purple 1.Dilan White 32 2.Hoshi Yadav 32 Black 1.Punya Khanna 26 | Junior Series

51: Captain's Message 1st December 2013 | Club Life December 2013 | Well, notwithstanding the recent storms, the weather has certainly improved over the past few weeks and that is helping to fill up the fairways. Our Club competitions are very well subscribed and everyone appears to be getting into the swing of the new season. That’s great to see, even though a busy course inevitably leads to some delay in the pace of play. There is one point concerning which I would like to ask for everyone’s assistance; on these busy days, please exit the green of the hole just played as soon as you have finished. This will help to ease the collective blood pressure of those waiting to play their approach shots! Cards can be marked on the next tee, and to save some time, please don’t leave your clubs at a point where you have to walk back down the fairway to retrieve them! Thank you. I mentioned last month that I was discovering more of what goes into making this the renowned Club that it is and some of those details are surprising. I went to visit the accommodation in Al Quoz where the Junior staff live, and it is quite a facility. There are nearly 900 people housed there, including some in married quarters and the facilities for dining, recreation, and sports are comprehensive. The site houses staff from Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, and Dubai Sports City in addition to EGC. Living off-site of course necessitates extra time for travel and buses start running to and fro at 4.30am (3.30 in the summer!) and thus breakfast is served for them from 2.45am onwards – and you thought you had to get up early to book a tee time............... At EGC full breakfast catering is available from 6.00am onwards and staff are serving at the various outlets throughout the day. Indeed, staff in Le Classique do not depart until after the last diner chooses to leave and this can sometimes be after the new dawn has broken! We have over 20 different nationalities working at our Club, with the youngest aged 18 years, and the oldest, a splendid 60. All 325 of them work hard to make our time at the Club as enjoyable as they can, and I for one, very much appreciate the job that each of them does. In this respect, I would again ask for your contribution of gifts towards the raffle for our Junior Staff fund. Lanie Amora in Membership Services is the lady to contact and your generosity will be very much appreciated. Congratulations to all those members who have managed to win prizes in our various competitions over the past month; there has been some very good play indeed on the fairways. Competition for The Hickory Putter is also keen with the leading score presently a net 59 – wow!! I would also like to record the victory by our Scratch League Team, captained by Johnny Aldridge, in their recent match against Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club. They managed to record a 3:1 victory on the Faldo course – well done team!! We really do have an excellent Scratch League crew; EGC came second in the League last year, so let’s hope they can go one step better than that this year. On the subject of winners, it was great to see Henrik Stenson’s victory in the Race to Dubai. Henrik is a familiar face to many at our Club, having been based here in Dubai for a number of years. Given that he was in a serious slump until this year, it just goes to show what hard work can accomplish – time for me to go and book some lessons! Finally, we have the Omega Dubai Ladies’ Masters coming up very soon so it will be an opportunity to watch some real experts. Club Management has also decided to leave the Faldo course open for play at the same time so you won’t have to forgo your own game either! Dick Purchase Club Captain 2013 – 2014

The 24-year-old from Chaiyaphum in Thailand drilled her approach shot with a 54 degree wedge over the lake guarding the green to within two feet of the cup and holed the birdie putt with little fluster, beating her nearest challenger Stacy Lewis by one shot and becoming the first Thai player to win the season-ending Ladies European Tour event in Dubai. "I am very excited. I just played my own game and stayed calm under pressure," said Phatlum after receiving the winner's trophy from Raynald Aeschlimann, Vice President, International Sales Director of Omega, in the presence of Mohamed Juma Buamaim, Vice Chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi and representatives of the sponsors.

On a difficult opening day over the Faldo course with high winds Fredriksson fought hard for a four over par 76, to take the overnight lead from Rashid Ali (77) and Andrew Robinson (78). The final round over the Majlis course produced some much better scoring from the 114 strong field. Fredriksson, at home on the Dubai Desert Classic layout, made his intentions clear from the outset with three birdies in the first seven holes, coming at the 2nd, 3rd and 7th holes. He gave a couple of shots back on the 8th to see him out in 34, one under par. With a comfortable lead going into the back nine he continued to play consistent golf dropping just two shots for a final round tally of 73. His eight shot victory was his fourth in five years only giving up the mantle last year to Michael Harradine who unfortunately couldn’t defend his title. Eddie Hesson compiled rounds of 80 and 77 to take runners-up place with Inaan Budhiraja in third with rounds of 84 and 74. The youngster followed his Junior Club Championship triumph with a third place finish in the senior equivalent, a fantastic effort. Also in the prizes were Rashid Ali, he took top prize in Division A (handicap 0-12) with scores of 77 and 83. Connor Keegan took runners-up spot with rounds of 83 and 79. Ed Hesson was not to be outdone by his son and took top honors in Division B (handicap 13-24) with rounds of 90 and 86. Anand Kapoor settled for runners-up position with a 93 and 86. Having never played the course before, Jennifer was shocked that she managed to win and is looking forward to coming back next year to defend. Also on the 2-under par mark was Jignesh Sangani but he narrowly missed out on top prize after a card count back, two birdies on Cameron’s closing two holes was the main reason for this. Marcus Wallman followed his fine display in the Black Te Challenge with a net 72 to take third place in Division A. Nishith Patel and Ed Hesson produced the low rounds of the day in Division B (handicap 11-20). Both carded rounds of 69 but it was Patel who took top prize due to a superior back nine. David Ellis found himself in third after a 2-under par 70. 149: Fardeen Meeran secures the runner-up spot to clinch the Black Level Order Of Merit in the final event of the Dubai Golf Par 3 Junior Series at the Emirates Golf Club. Dubai Golf hosted the final event of this season's Dubai Golf Par 3 Series. Played over the Emirates 9 hole Academy Course there were 50 budding future stars battling it out for the top prize. This season has proved a huge success, originally being an initiative by the Dubai Golf Academy Professionals to encourage junior golfers to move from the driving range to the golf course. The events have truly shown our core belief that every child no matter what level they are can compete and have fun. Juniors from four levels of the Dubai Golf Junior programme ( Black, Purple, Blue, Yellow) competed against one another, winners received vouchers for Wild Wadi Waterpark, trophies and other prizes. Overall prizes were also awarded for our Order Of Merit which has been gaining momentum over the season. The Order Of Merit events have shown character and the completive values which we like to encourage in our juniors, and more importantly providing a friendly atmosphere where children can make the leap from practice to course. A closer inspection of the Order Of Merit will see some star performances from young players like Sean Cooper who at the age of 7 has played all events in the Black Level and has bagged a very respectable 8th spot. Organizing Golf Professional Jonathan Craddock said “It was an excellent day and has been a thoroughly enjoyable season, we are privileged to have some of the finest talent in the UAE, I was so proud watching all our juniors have so much fun out there, it is truly inspirational”. We hope everyone who participated enjoyed the events and will join us in October 2014 for another push for continued success of the Par 3 Series. | May 2014

158: Trip to Prague June 2014 A group of eight EGC members recently took a long weekend trip to Prague to play golf 12 -15 June. This trip was proposed to GM Andrew Whitelaw by EGC member Pavel Foubik who hails from Czech Republic and who was extremely keen to show parts of this spectacular country to members; Pavel did all the behind the scenes organisation of booking hotels and arranging matches against other clubs there. Pavel arranged and sponsored the shirts for the matches; travel shirts, showerproof jackets and balls were kindly supplied by EGC. The group of eight included GM Andrew Whitelaw, Club Captain Dick Purchase, past Captains, Tom Barry and Moshe Kohli, Drummond Welsh, Chris Turlik, Campbell Steedman and Shomail Ghalib. Trip to Prague by Tom Barry Our group all met early on the first morning to start the trip with a bubbly breakfast in the First Class lounge at Dubai airport courtesy of Dick and Campbell. The Emirates flight to Prague was just five and half hours which was a great flight with very attentive hostesses - plenty of white grape juice and red (which Dick says was excellent.) On arrival, Drummond soon wanted a smoke and Campbell suggested he went to the Arrivals smoke room to which Drum replied, “I would rather go outside - you could get killed in there!” Outside we were met by Pavel clutching a bottle of a local welcoming drink that he proceeded to dispense into plastic glasses by the roadside!! Then it was onto to the bus for what was supposed to be a two- hour drive or less but it seems there was an accident on the highway so we had to detour!! Ugh!! It was a long bus trip - with pit stops necessary. At one petrol station we had to ask for a key to use the two toilets (so only two people at a time). Moshe finished, locked the door and gave the key back. As we began boarding the bus, Chris was missing – unfortunately he had been locked in the toilet!! Eventually we got to the Marianske Lazne, Esplanade Hotel - a beautiful building in an old Spa town. We checked in and each of us got an absolutely huge suite – the biggest hotel rooms/suites any of us had ever been in. Despite our late arrival, Pavel had organised a lovely surprise for us in the form of two horse-drawn carriages which took us on a sightseeing tour around the spa town; there were many beautiful buildings, street side cafes and restaurants to be seen – such a picturesque town! After freshening up we were invited to dinner with the President of the Golf Club and the hotel owners, all friends of Pavel. This was the start of the huge meals with nice wines and many toasts etc. Then, of course, we went back to the bar for a few more and to watch golf and football on the TV; naturally there were a few slide- offs to much longed for beds while some stalwarts stayed on. It was an early start the next morning for a sumptuous buffet breakfast and then off to the Royal Golf Club MarianskeLazne which was a journey of three minutes! With clubs out, and after some animated discussions about format, we were off, some of us with rather stunning caddies - Dick’s was a young 18-year old girl who played off a handicap of seven! It was a beautiful course, beautiful weather, but neither of which helped us to defeat the local club team. We lost 3-1 but a good time was had by all. It was wonderful to walk the course seeing little squirrels scampering across the fairways and up trees, presumably to hide their nuts! Andrew had one of the best short game days of his life and putted phenomenally so he and Dick won their match comfortably. Chris and Shomail were winning three up with six to play but were undone by Pavel and his local liqueur shots and succumbed to four birdies as they lost two down. What to do?

159: to walk the course seeing little squirrels scampering across the fairways and up trees, presumably to hide their nuts! Andrew had one of the best short game days of his life and putted phenomenally so he and Dick won their match comfortably. Chris and Shomail were winning three up with six to play but were undone by Pavel and his local liqueur shots and succumbed to four birdies as they lost two down. What to do? A few drinks later and we were at it again- another huge meal with more beverages and numerous toasts and speeches. We hope to welcome them back to Dubai sometime. Then it was back to Prague and into the hotel restaurant for MORE food! After another banquet and copious beverages we all decided on a stroll downtown to see the sights but inevitably ‘dropped into’ a street bar for a refresher - and, of course never left to see the sights! It was quite noisy at times with bands of Dutch supporters passing by singing the praises of another Dutch victory in the World Cup. Eventually some of the team decided it was time for bed - or to move on. Move on most of us did to yet another hostelry close to the hotel where we spent another few hours sipping and people watching. Good fun but the after-effects would be expected in the morning......... Next morning most of us made it to breakfast but the odd straggler just about made it to the bus, clutching a McDonalds coffee and breakfast burger! A 45-minute journey brought us to the spectacular Karstejn Golf course and we were out on the course fairly quickly. This time we were in two four balls - no match against a team from the host club. It was overcast, a bit windy and some rain at the very end, but nevertheless we enjoyed a beautiful course with the Castle in the background. Pavel continued to patrol us as we played, dispensing further shots of local hospitality if anyone cared to indulge! It was straight back to the city and hotel afterwards as we were all going out to dinner afterwards to a very special restaurant, arranged by the redoubtable Pavel, of course. Special? It was spectacular! A restaurant in a cave underground! Electric atmosphere and food that was out of this world. We were treated to six courses with different grape beverages for each course. A few speeches and numerous toasts were the order of the day and believe you me, we didn’t want to leave but had to in the end. What a restaurant - called Svata Karla , so if you are ever in Prague, book it and go ! The next morning we were up bright(?) and early as we had to travel to Albatross Golf Club, play, have a formal lunch and get to the airport to catch our afternoon flight to Dubai. So it was straight on the coach, after checking out and loading all the bags - at 00.60 in the morning - a quiet bus journey and we were at Albatross, which is a beautiful course and due to have the European Tour there in August. The Albatross team to play us included David Carter, ex European Tour Pro and well known to many of us in Dubai. Unfortunately he was in form and he and his partner managed to beat GM Andrew Whitelaw and myself. Our only winners were Moshe and Shomail so we lost the match 3-1. A good time was, however, had by all, with the inevitable hard luck stories for some defeats. Pavel again tried to raise our spirits out on the course but it didn’t seem to work - I wonder why?! A very nice luncheon followed, sprinkled with pints of the local brew (excellent), a thank you to our hosts by Dick and then we had to be on our way to the airport. Our host team all seemed keen to come on a return trip to Dubai and hopefully they will so that we can get our revenge. A wonderful long weekend - thank you Pavel. Great organisation, great fun. Can we go again??

162: The end-of-season Scramble produced an excellent turnout of 96 players over the Majlis course with the team of Nina Larm, Johnny Aldridge, Stephen Jones and Pentti Tahvanainen claiming top prize with a score of 57.5. The 4-ball was captained admirably by incoming Vice-Captain, Johnny Aldridge, and it was a fitting send off for Stephen Jones who will be returning to America in the summer. The closest challengers to the champions were Marian and Peter Pavy, Sandra Chia and David Formas with a 58.6 tally to take runners-up place. Micky Brigg, Keith Prosser, Julian Nicholas and Ian Scott picked up third place after signing for a 58.7 total. The highlight of the day undoubtedly went to Bruno Muller who managed a hole-in-one on the par 3 eleventh. Bruno was delighted to record his first ever hole-in-one and happily ‘rang the bell’ for his fellow members to celebrate the achievement. Also in the prizes on a great day’s golf were Marion Pavy, Suresh Shewakramani and Vipen Sethi for their accuracy on the nearest the pin prize holes. | End-of-Season Scramble : Friday 19th June 2014

163: Tony Hutchinson and Patrick Mulligan were the star performers in the June edition of the Mashreq Medal Championship in Association with BMW and Harvey Nichols Dubai. On a sweltering hot day accompanied by a tough breeze both Hutchinson and Mulligan signed for 4-under par rounds of 68 over the Faldo course. Hutchinson produced one of his best rounds of the season, his gross 77 was the lowest of the day and his net 68 earned him top prize in Handicap Division A (handicap 0-15). He was delighted to take home the AED 2000 worth of Harvey Nichols vouchers on offer. On the tough opening nine he only dropped one shot on the par four seventh, a further 6 pars followed on the inward stretch. His closest challenger in Division A was Zubin Chandra who carded a 71 with Nikhil Damani in third after a card count back on net 73. A solid back nine of 5-under par was the key to his success and the highlight of his front nine was a birdie four on the par five 3rd hole. Mulligan claimed a 4-stroke win over Arjun Kapur with Suresh Shewakramani in third with a 75. | Mashreq Medal, June 2014 in association with BMW & Harvey Nichols, Dubai | 27th June 2014
