FC: We Didn't Start the Fire | By Billie Joel | A Scrapbook by Fergus Allen

Introduction | Billie Joel's song "We Didn't Start the Fire" talks about how different the world became over a few years. many different events took place over the years that this song is about, not a lot of them good.

During the Cold War, the U.S.A. and Russia were engaged in a very difficult political situation, i.e. they didn’t like each other very much. For several years, an American made Lockheed U-2 spy plane was sent to fly over Russia and gather valuable information about Soviet bases and the like. The Russians found out about this, and on May 1st, 1960, they sent an attack plane to deal with it, as SAMs (surface to air missiles) could not reach the Lockheed. However, even the attack plane they sent could not reach it, but then a mistake occurred, a SAM hit the Russian plane, blowing it up, subsequently sending out shockwaves which destroyed the U-2’s wings, sending it crashing down to Earth. The Russians then captured the pilot and ended his mission. This whole incident led to Russia being furious with America once again.

Syngman Rhee was born on the 26th of March, 1875, in P’yongsan, Hwaanghae province, in what would become known as North Korea. During the Second World War, Rhee moved to Washington, D.C. There he tried to secure promises from the allies regarding Korea’s freedom. He would later become the first president of the Republic of Korea, and would rule his Republic through the Korean War. While he was president, he ruled more like a dictator than anything else. In fact, at one point during the war he even defied the UN completely by setting about 25,000 North Korean prisoners free. He died on July 19th, 1965, in Honolulu, Hawaii, at age 90.

Ernest Evans, or Chubby Checker as he’s better known, was born in 1941, in Philadelphia. He would later become a very famous musician and be very popular. His rock ‘n’ roll style would prove to be quite catchy. By the early sixties, he had already become a hit, mainly thanks to his hit song “The Twist”, in 1960. His stage name was inspired by another musician; a jazz artist nicknamed ‘Fats Domino’, and was meant as a parody. Checker was in two films about his song “The Twist”, as it was very famous and inspired a dance style of the same name in North America.

“Psycho” was a thriller movie released in 1960, directed by famous director, Alfred Hitchcock. The film is extremely famous and was Hitchcock’s highest grossing film. The most famous scene from the entire film was the scene where character Marion, played by Janet Leigh, was stabbed to death in her hotel shower. Other stars from the movie include: Martin Balsam as the private detective and Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, the mentally ill owner of the hotel. The film is primarily set in Phoenix, Arizona. Hitchcock decided, despite recent advancements in cinema at the time, to film the whole movie in black and white, because he thought it would be too gory otherwise.

In 1959, a Belgium occupied Congo was not doing too well for itself. There was horrible poverty and a huge riot in the streets of the capitol Leopoldville, which ended in the military having killed 49 civilians. With all the civil unrest, it would not seem an ideal time for mother country Belgium to grant independence to the Congo, however, by 1960 that would change. On the 30th of June, 1960, independence was granted to the Congolese people by the Belgians. Joseph Kasavubu became the president after independence and made Lumumba his Prime Minister. Lumumba wanted a united Congo. Soon after, the civil war started and lasted until 1964.
