FC: AMERICAN FOOTBALL | BY RILEY, AUSTIN
Football, ever since the game was formed in the mid 1800's it quickly escalated to one of the most played and watched game in America if not the world. But, football didn't get to the most famous game in America easily, it had to go through a 30 year process just to even be respected as a sport, then it went through major rule reforms just to get to the modern game we watch and love today. As Bill Shankly always says "Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that."
(text) | It was started in the mid- 1800's and was a sport that was derived from the European game of Rugby. Walter Camp is widely considered to be the most important figure in the development of American football, He proposed changes at the first meeting he attended in 1878, a reduction from fifteen players to eleven, at the time it was rejected, but later in 1880 it was passed, the effect was to open up the game and show the differences of speed over strength. Walter Camps most famous change, the establishment of the line of scrimmage and the snap from center to quarterback, was also passed in 1880. Many men were touched by Walter Camp here is a football players quote of him, being an old-school type of guy I was always interested in the history of the game and Walter Camp as one of the founders.
As a result of the 1905–1906 reforms, mass formation plays became illegal and forward passes legal, and some other changes made were, the requirements that at least seven offensive players be on the line of scrimmage at the time of the snap, that there be no pushing or pulling, and that interlocking interference was not allowed. These changes greatly reduced the potential for collision injuries. Several rules changes during the first third of the 20th century had a profound impact on the game, mostly in opening up the passing game. In 1914, the first roughing-the-passer penalty was implemented, In 1918, the rules on eligible receivers were becoming less strict to allow eligible players to catch the ball anywhere on the field. Scoring rules also changed during this time: field goals were lowered to three points in 1909 and touchdowns raised to six points in 1912. And before these massive reforms a former referee explained his job like this, trying to maintain order during a legalized gang brawl involving 80 toughs with a little whistle, a hanky and a ton of prayer.
Football is a expanding sport that is taking the World by storm, at first in Pre-World War II times it was only America playing football but today in the European nations of Scotland, England, Spain, The Netherlands and Germany already have a international football league, and in Japan football is starting to be a regularly played sport. In the near future many countries are planning on building a International Football League shaped very much like the International Soccer League we have today. Football is becoming such a famous sport each year during the Superbowl the ESPN website nearly crashed from too much traffic, and many cable companies were about to take it off the air because some areas cable started to stutter because of too much traffic.
Although football took a very long time to even be establish as a sport instead a new branch of Rugby, it is the most played and watched game that many people know, and love, and just can't get enough of.
