Pro photographer-approved: 10 tips for taking stunning graduation photos
Graduation season is here, and whether you're celebrating your own achievement or helping someone you love document theirs, capturing the moment with professional-looking photos is a must.
A set of great grad pics is the best way to preserve the memories of your achievements forever. It also ensures you have amazing images to feature in personalized graduation announcements, party invitations, and commemorative photo books.
We spoke with Dallas-based photographer Merissa, who specializes in senior portraits, brand content, and love stories, to get her top tips for nailing your graduation photos.
With over a decade of experience behind the lens, Merissa's signature style blends light, airy tones with rich, warm colors to highlight her clients' joy and confidence. Here are her pro insights.
1. Choose the right outfit
"A white or black dress always looks best with your cap and gown," Merissa advises. These classic tones complement the graduation regalia without clashing in photos. If you're considering off-the-shoulder styles, just be cautious—they can limit arm movement, which can impact your posing options.
The same tip applies if you’re wearing a suit or formal pants and a dress shirt. Keep the foundation neutral—black and white is perfect—and add an accent color, if desired, through unfussy accessories.
2. Steam everything before the shoot
"Steam your outfits, stole, and gown before your shoot!" Merissa says. Wrinkles show up more than you'd expect in high-resolution photos, so arriving with crisp, smooth attire will make a huge difference.
If you don’t have access to a steamer, use a low-temperature iron with a press cloth. Test an inconspicuous area first and be careful to avoid damage to graduation regalia.
3. Plan ahead for tanning
Got a spray tan on your to-do list? Make sure to do it 2–3 days prior to your session so the color settles evenly. "Cover any splotchy areas with makeup," Merissa notes.
4. Pack a touch-up kit
A small emergency kit can save the day. Bring a hairbrush, hairspray, blotting papers, and a few makeup essentials for touch-ups, especially on warm or windy days.
5. Bring props that pack a punch
Want the iconic champagne pop shot? Merissa recommends bringing two bottles: "Sometimes you need a few tries to get the perfect photo!" She also suggests biodegradable confetti cannons for a fun, eco-friendly celebration moment. Other great options include balloons, letterboards, and your college acceptance sign.
You could also use accessories that indicate a next big career move. For example, medical or nursing school graduates might add a stethoscope, and law school grads could pose with a gavel. Heading to a college athletic program? Pose with a ball, bat, or other sports paraphernalia.
6. Prioritize comfort
Heels and brand-new dress shoes look great—but they aren’t great for walking long distances between campus landmarks.
"Bring a pair of sandals to wear between photo locations so your feet don’t hurt," Merissa says.
7. Prep for the fountain finale
If your campus has a tradition of hopping into the fountain at the end of your session, come prepared. “Bring a towel to dry off after and consider a change of clothes if you’re heading to dinner afterward,” Merissa suggests.
Many campuses have key landmarks that are great backdrops for your photo shoot. Scope out iconic buildings, interesting architecture, and signs that represent your school or college town.
8. Don’t forget the hype team
Graduation photos should be joyful, not stressful. "Bring a friend or family member to help carry your things and hype you up during your shoot!" Merissa encourages. If no one's available, a rolling suitcase or cart is a great backup for your outfit changes and props.
9. Go bold with makeup
For makeup, go bolder than usual: "False lashes, bold lipstick—what may feel like too much in person will really make your photos pop."
10. Stay organized & have fun
With many props and outfit changes, it’s easy for things to get chaotic. Use a rolling suitcase or large tote to keep your wardrobe, shoes, and accessories organized. Carry your gown and stole in a garment bag to keep them unwrinkled. And most importantly, enjoy the moment—this is your time to shine!
