63 graduation quotes & how to to use them in your photo projects

Graduate in cap and gown standing with parent celebrating graduation

Everyone celebrating a graduation—graduates, their parents, and all their loved ones—feel a wide range of emotions that can be hard to put into words. There’s pride in academic achievement, anticipation for the next stage of life, and even a touch of sadness that their school journey has come to an end. It’s important to acknowledge those emotions while honoring the milestone.

When you want to express all those emotions or share them with your beloved grad, turn to the wise words of authors, academics, and other celebrated voices. Find a quote from our collection that speaks to you, and express it creatively through a photo project that showcases your best graduation photos.

Along with more than 60 quotations, here are four creative project ideas that use quotes in photo books, graduation announcements, and other graduation gift ideas. Take inspiration from these ideas and make them your own.

Project idea: How to use quotes as captions in a photo book

Using graduation quotes as captions in a photo book is easy to do in Mixbook Studio™. Pair favorite quotes with photos that match their sentiment. If you start with a photo book theme that includes text elements, such as our Classic Graduation theme, you just need to edit the placeholder text and replace it with a quote.

Here’s how:

  1. Drag and drop one or more photos onto the page of a photo book.
  2. Double-click on the theme’s placeholder text and type or paste in the text for the quote. Or, open the Text panel to the left, click “Add text,” and click on the page. Type or paste the quote into the text box.
  3. Format the text using the tools in the Text panel. You can change the font, size, color, and alignment, and also change the fill color and border style for the text box.
  4. Reposition the text box, if needed, by clicking and dragging.

Tip: Pay attention to the orange guidelines that pop up. These will help you center the text box and align it with other elements on the page.

Project idea: How to create a unique graphic with a quote

With Mixbook Studio™’s extensive collection of fully customizable stickers—plus text tools—you can create a custom graphic element for any photo book or card that showcases a meaningful graduation quote.

Here’s how we made the graduation cap motif above in a project using the Graduation Photo Portraits photo book theme:

  1. Open the Stickers panel and browse the theme’s stickers, or search using a keyword like “graduation.”
  2. Select a sticker, such as the graduation cap we chose in the example, and click and drag it onto a page.
  3. Reposition the sticker, and optionally resize it by clicking and dragging the corners.
  4. Open the Text panel and select “Add text.” Click on the page and type or paste the quote into the text box.
  5. Edit the text (font, color, size etc.) using the text tools.
  6. Reposition the text box over the sticker.

Tip: To bring the text forward or the sticker backward, click on the element and select the “Forward” or “Back” options in the pop-up toolbar.

Quotes about learning & education

A graduation might mark the end of someone’s school years or a stepping stone on a longer educational journey. Either way, the ceremony is a celebration of knowledge and learning, as expressed by the following great graduation quotes:

Project idea: How to add a quote to your grad cards

Graduation announcement cards present another opportunity to bring quotes into a custom photo project. Browse Mixbook’s collection of graduation announcements and look for designs that have space for more text elements.

Our PhD Graduate announcement card, for example, has a solid black reverse side, which is ideal for adding text. Choose a quote that reflects your grad’s unique experience or philosophy, or the words of one of their personal heroes. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Text panel and select “Add text.” Click on the space on the side of the card where you want the text to appear.
  2. Type or paste in the quote.
  3. Reposition, edit and reformat the text (font, size, color etc.) so that it’s visually appealing.
  4. Optionally add stickers such as a border or motif from the Stickers panel.

Graduation quotes to celebrate your bright future

A graduation is a time to reflect upon the past years of schooling, but it’s even more inspiring to look toward the future. A new diploma or degree is a step forward to the grad’s career or ongoing adventures. These quotes capture this exciting moment in their life:

  • “I encourage you to live with life. Be courageous, adventurous. Give us a tomorrow, more than we deserve.” —Maya Angelou

  • “Don’t just get involved. Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table.” —Barack Obama

Project idea: How to layer quotes over a photo background

Sometimes you get a great photo from your graduation ceremony or other celebration that’s perfect as a full-page background image. With Mixbook Studio™’s layering tools, you can showcase a meaningful graduation quote over a background photo to create an easy, yet visually interesting design.

For our example, we used the Editorial College Book theme.

Here’s how we created a layered quote page design:

  1. In the Layouts panel, select a layout featuring one full-page photo.
  2. Drag and drop the photo into the placeholder frame.
  3. If desired, use tools in the pop-up menu to edit the photo. In the example, we clicked “Opacity” and changed the setting to 40. Then we opened the “Effects” options and chose B&W. (Other edits are available—experiment with the tools until you like the look of the background photo.)
  4. Open the Stickers panel and find a shape to layer over the photo, and under the text. Drag the shape(s) onto the page. Resize and reposition the shape(s).
  5. Open the Text panel, click “Add text” and click over the shape. Type or paste the quote into the text box. Edit the text to get a look you like.

Tip: Use the Forward and Backward options in the pop-up menu to make sure the photo, shapes, and text boxes appear in the correct order.

Graduation quotes for proud parents

Parents are often the proudest people at any graduation. If you’re a proud parent who wants to express just how impressed you are by your graduate, one of these quotes might come in handy:

  • “Graduation day is tough for adults. They go to the ceremony as parents. They come home as contemporaries. After 22 years of child-raising, they are unemployed.” —Erma Bombeck
  • “Set out each day believing in your dreams. Know without a doubt that you were made for great things.” —Josh Hinds
  • "Adults are always asking little kids what they want to be when they grow up because they're looking for ideas." —Paula Poundstone
  • "Your families are extremely proud of you. You can't imagine the sense of relief they are experiencing." —Kurt Vonnegut
  • “From my point of view, which is that of a storyteller, I see your life as already artful, waiting, just waiting and ready for you to make it art.” —Toni Morrison
  • “Don’t allow people to dim your shine because they are blinded. Tell them to put on sunglasses.” —Lady Gaga
  • “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.” —Anne Frank
  • “I have found the best way to give advice to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it.” —Harry S. Truman

Our top tip for graduation photo books

A 2025 Mixbook survey found that photos of milestone celebrations—like graduations—are very important to Americans. Around 37% of those surveyed printed and preserved photos of major milestones in the past year.

However, most place even more importance on everyday moments: 47% printed and preserved photos of everyday happenings. Further, 74% of parents or guardians said that everyday moments are the memories from the past year they’re most grateful for.

When you’re creating a graduation photo book to celebrate the milestone, remember to include plenty of photos—and perhaps quotes—that honor the everyday moments that led up to it. Think study sessions, extracurriculars, and friendships made throughout their school years.

Those cap-and-gown portraits get all the glory, but the countless unposed candids capture important memories as well. Luckily, your photo book has space to showcase them all!

  • “Intelligence without ambition is like a bird without wings.” —Dali
  • “Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be.” —Grandma Moses
  • “The highest result of education is tolerance.” —Helen Keller
  • “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” —Norman Vincent Peale
  • “Be the best of whatever you are.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.
