8: September 2011 saw multiple forest fires throughout the Austin Area. The most devastating was the fire in Bastrop County. There were more than 1500 homes destroyed and many more damaged. Once a need for donations was identified, Kyle/Buda VFW and Ladies Auxiliary set up a donation area within 24 hours. We collected donations starting September 7 and lasted through September 9th. The community responded, and the first 2 truckloads of donations were sent on September 7th to the central receiving station in Smithville. We also worked closely with the Lockhart VFW to identify a need in their area for both members and non- members and arranged collections for almost 12 truckloads of supplies. There were 16 different Comrades and Ladies who expended 200+ labor hours, drove 500+ miles ensuring that over 16 truckloads of donations were distributed. In addition to delivering goods directly to Smithville and working with the Lockhart VFW, we also worked closely with the owner of several laundry facilities in the Bastrop area that was providing a free wash day for those who were displaced because of the fire. We were able to purchase enough detergent, bleach and fabric softener to wash 450 loads of clothing. . All of the efforts were greatly appreciated and it again shows how a small group of dedicated people can truly make a difference for those in need. Among our visitors was Representative Jason Isaac who showed his appreciation and support. The Kyle City Council, during their September 20th meeting, thanked the VFW for their efforts and issued a proclamation on our behalf.

She then led the members in a resounding “Happy Birthday” with dinner following for members and their families.
