FC: Nikhil's Upanayan June 12th, 2011 | Upanayana means "sitting close by," referring to the boy's taking shelter of the guru (teacher). Traditionally, a boy would move away from home to the teacher's ashram, called "gurukula." The ceremony marks the entering of a person into adulthood.

7: Mathru bhojan | The upanayanam marks the stage of learning from the guru. In the ceremony there is a part called the 'Mathru bhojan' when the mother feeds the boy from her plate for the last time. After the upanayanam, the boy is not expected to be fed from the mother's plate again.
