FC: The Cotton Gin | By: Alex Wooner Courtney Daigle

In the early 1800's people viewed the United States as a land of opportunity. They took this view of opportunity to turn it into economic growth. | One of the most important opportunities to grasp was the farming industry, and one of the most important crops grown was cotton. In order to succeed in the 1880's people needed to be resourceful. They needed to be resourceful because America was not very wealthy at the time. With the growing cotton and farming industry America could finally make some money.

Cotton farming was very big in the southern United States, but demand grew. It was hard to get very much cotton because it was back-breaking work to separate the seeds from the cotton. | In 1793 Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. The cotton gin was the first automated machine that separated the seed from the cotton. | Without the cotton gin people working on the plantations could only separate about 1lb a day, but with it they could separate up to 50lbs!

The farmers that owned the plantations were very happy to be able to produce more cotton thus making more money. This also benefited the rest of the country because it brought more money to the U.S. | A group of people that most likely didn't enjoy the invention of the cotton gin were the African American slaves. This was because the invention caused the slave trade in America to increase drastically.

The cotton gin significantly transformed peoples lives by allowing more cotton to be made which brought in a lot of money to the U.S. This helped to pay off the war debts the U.S. had. The cotton gin revolutionized the way that people got and grew cotton all around the world. It made the cotton industry a lot more efficient and that helped out many countries. Even Britain started growing cotton.

In the present day U.S. the cotton gin is no longer in use. This is because of new inventions have allowed cotton to be more efficiently produced and harvested. The idea of how the cotton gin worked is still in use, but many improvements have been made. There are now much larger machines that plant, harvest, separate seed, and roll the cotton into bales all in one.

The majority of the people living in America in the early 1800's benefited from the invention of the cotton gin. It brought more money to farmers, and it also brought more money into the U.S. | The only group of people that did not benefit from the cotton gin would be the African American slaves. An increase in slaves was needed in order to meet the new demands for cotton. Cotton was being used in more new, helpful, and less expensive ways which meant that it was constantly being reinvented and more was demanded from it. With the unhappy slaves, the rest of America was free to prosper with their large amount of cotton.

The cotton gin is similar to the cotton harvester of today. It separated the seeds from the cotton, and the "cotton gin" of today does just that. The cotton gin differs from the harvester of today because the harvester does multiple things such as; plant, harvest, and separate the seeds from the cotton all in one. The invention of the cotton gin tells us about how people in the early 1800's were innovative and resourceful in order to make things easier in their lives. By having the creation of the cotton gin, the citizens of America improved and benefited their new and fast growing country and home.
