44: Memories from Dan's Childhood -Dan grew up going to Bauer Christian Reformed Church -He went to Hudsonville Elementary and Unity Christian -Began working at Talsma's in May of 1986 -Our goat "Brighty" was so funny, but it got sick and died because it ate the leaves from my Dad's rhubarb plants. -Sleeping in the little trailer up north was horrible and listening to my Dad snore was even worse -Curt and I would take opposite sides of the roads up north and look for beer cans for our collection (and to pass time) -Uncle Bills Dad in Florida took Curt and me "shrimping" one night. We went to a bridge and he lowered a lantern close to the water. The shrimp came towards the light and he would scoop them up in a net. We only got a couple, but he fried them up when we got back (Nasty!) He also told me what "shaking hands with the Governor" meant. -Hitchhiked to Newport Beach in Rhode Island with Steve Postmus and Rick VantLand while at a young peoples convention. Much more fun swimming than listening to speakers. -Doug Heuker and I found varnish in his garage and were lighting puddles of it and burning stuff in them. His mom came home from picking apples and when she opened the door, lots of smoke poured out. She got MAD! He got a spanking and I was told to ride my bike home a.s.a.p. -Loved playing "Kick the can" with Roy, Glen and Timmy Fountain. Also playing ball tag in the big tree next to the dog coop -We would ride our bikes down to Baldwin Oaks Campground and watch the kids who had quarters play "Donkey Kong"and "PacMan". I was jealous because I never had any money. -My Dad and Ken Bosch would farm some land at Ben Bosch's. We would run all over in his old barn and play in the hay bales. I wanted to help throw hay bales from the wagon on to the conveyor, but I was to little. -I think I learned to enjoy running early because before I learned to ride a bike, I would run behind Curt, Dave Hanson and others so I could be around them. I ran all over the neighborhood when I was 5 yrs. old. -I used to cry almost every day in 1st grade because I missed my mom. -My 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Bobeldyk was the best. -Steve Postmus broke his leg in 3rd grade on the monkey bars and about 3 weeks later broke the other one. -I liked watching dune buggies drive up the hill to get into Silver Lake Dunes. We would stay at Upper Silver Lake with VanHuis' or Boschs' -Fell on a sprinkler head trying to catch a football and it put a hole in my right cheek which required 8 stitches. This happened in our front yard on my 10th birthday.
45: -Played 1st and 2nd chair in 5th and 6th grade band with Steve Taylor. Nobody in the coronet section could bump us out. We both played so much the same. -Came in 7th place in our Jr. High "Turkey Trot" (5k run) -Took out a $5,000 load while in 12th grade for a 1984 Camaro Z28 -Sunday afternoons my dad would take a nap so Curt and I would play Monopoly, Stratego and made up games to pass the time. -My parents were janitors at Bauer CR Church for about 14 years. I remember picking up candy wrappers and straightening books every Sunday. I also remember reading Hardy Boy books in the church library while my mom would vacuum upstairs in the church sanctuary. -Dan's paternal grandparents are Ralph and Henrietta Timmerman and his maternal grandparents are Richard and Della Meengs. -Made profession of faith at Bauer CRC in Jan. of 1989 -Taught 4th grade cadet class for 2 years at Bauer
