1: Dimitar Peshev was the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Bulgaria and Minister of Justice during World War II | Peshev's party which was the government majority party enacted anti-Jewish legislation
2: 1940 Law for the Defense of the Nation, which restricted Jews' participation in the country's economic and social life and imposed a special tax on Jews. | In addition Jews were ordered to wear a Jewish star and male Jews were drafted for forced labor. | He organized a parliamentary delegation and went to see Petr Gabrovski, the Minister of Interior.

4: In February 1942 the Bulgarian government agreed to deport 20,000 Jews from Thrace and Macedonia. However, since there were nowhere near 20,000 Jews in these provinces, it was agreed to make up the difference with 6,000 Jews from Bulgaria itself. The first such group of Bulgarian Jews was to come from Kyustendil.
6: After the war, Peshev was charged with anti-Semitism and anti-Communism by the Soviet courts, and sentenced to death. However, after outcry from the Jewish community, his sentence was commuted to 15 years imprisonment, though released after just one year. His deeds went unrecognised after the war, as he lived in poverty in Bulgaria. It was not until 1973 when he was awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations. He died the same year.
