6: December 2nd, 1823 Dear journal, Today is the day we leave for the United States. I'm told that it is a wonderful place with food and work everywhere. My family has little money, and there is 7 of us. We plan on finding a home in New York. All but my youngest sister's will have to find work. We need as much money as we can but anything will be better than starving here in Ireland. There has been a potato famine here for about a year now, it's devastated half the country already and is rapidly moving. Well headed to the ship now , wish me luck. Cliffony McDongal
