 By Salma and Khadeejah

Japanese is a Ural-Altaic language that is currently spoken by about 130 million people world wide. | It is the 9th most popular spoken language in the world.

The history of this language goes back to influences of the Chinese Han Rulers and Korean Leaders.

They helped Japan with making their own writing system for the first time. It was based on Chinese Kanji. Soon, after they adopted the Chinese writing system they changed it and made it their own.

Japanese Flag | As the centuries passed...

Written Japanese became more standardized while spoken became more dialectical. During the 16th century, the Portuguese brought technology and linguistic changes to Japan.

Considering all of these changes to the language... | They also showed them typing, printing, and helped them compile the first-ever Japanese Dictionary.

Japan remained closed to other linguistic influences for about 200 years. Until the American Matthew Perry came to Japan in 1868. He shared things from America with them.

Due to this, English and other Western languages ....

...gave new words and linguistic changes to the Japanese language.

The Japanese government now monitors changes to the Japanese language since 1946 until now.

We think that the government will still be monitoring any influences to the language in the future.

We also think that there will be many websites for learning the language. There may be new inventions for the language like the wood block print.

Japanese Woodblock Print | The Chinese were the first to use this invention. Later, Japan adopted this invention during 1603-1867 (Edo period).

Another invention that was also popular was the Japanese typewriter. It was created by Kyota Sugimoto. He found a way of accumulating Japanese characters on a typewriter. | About 2,400 of the most commonly used characters were chosen.

Scholars often debate on the origin of Japanese. Some sources show evidence that it originates from the Ural-Altaic, Polynesian, and Chinese languages. The Korean language is most proven to be similar to Japanese when it comes to general structure.

There are also many similarities between the language of the Ryuku islands. Nevertheless, both tongues are pronounced very different from the Japanese.
