My name is Earl, and i am part of the peace corp. I have been part of it for a little over two years and the scariest thing i have ever been through is Hurricane Katrina.
I' am Earl's brother Zater. This is a picture from my New Orleans trip before hurricane Katrina occurred. We have been in the peace corp together since the beginning.
As you can see New Orleans is located by the ocean.
Hurricanes are intense low pressure areas that form over a body of warm water in the summer and early fall. | Hurricanes get there energy from water vapors, due to latent heat of condensations, after they evaporate from the ocean surface. In other words water vapor is fuel for hurricanes. The low pressure system itself causes winds to spiral inwards. Thunderstorms and showers where all of this energy is released are usually organized into bands encircling the center of the hurricane.
Hurricane Katrina formed over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005. The winds got up to 175 mph, and the amount of damage was worth 88.5 billion dollars. Hurricane Katrina not only effected Louisiana, but it made a huge impact on the Bahamas, Florida, Cuba, Mississippi, Alabama, and most of Eastern North America.
The majority of the deaths that occurred can be blamed on the levee that failed. 80% of New Orleans was flooded due to this. At least 1, 836 people died from this hurricane.
People in New Orleans still need your help!!!!
Even now, 5 years later, people are in need of money and shelter
The roofs of homes were covered in water
It hurt to see family's destroyed
We were on our way to help
