1: In 1896, Van Buren began an apprenticeship for Francis Silverster who tried to influence him to be a Federalist but he refused. | Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, NY in his father's tavern on December 5, 1892

2: In 1801, Van Buren moves to New York City and becomes friends with Aarong Burr. In 1803, Van Buren is admitted to the bar. He became a senator in 1821.

3: Martin Van Buren married Hannah Hoes in Catskills, NY in 1807 | Childhood playmate and distant cousin... | They had four sons: Abraham, John, Martin and Smith Thompson

4: Hannah Van Buren died of tuberculosis February 5, 1819 and was buried in Kinderhook Cemetery where Martin Van Buren is later buried as well when he dies July 24, 1862

5: Under Jackson's presidency Van Buren served as Secretary of State, minister to England and Vice President. With Jackson's support Van Buren won the nomination for the Democratic Party and won the election of 1836.

6: One of Van Buren's first acts as President was to finish what his friend Andrew Jackson had started. Van Buren completed Jackson's plan for Indian removal known as the "Trail of Tears".

7: The Panic of 1837 began soon after Van Buren's took office due to Jackson's "specie circular". It was the worst depression to date.

8: Since Van Buren supported the Democratic cause of Indian Removal he was able to temporarily silence the Southern Democrats call for admitting Texas into the Union

9: In 1839, a border dispute with Canada began over New Brunswick between Maine and the British forces in Canada. A negotiation was not settled until under Harrison's administration but Van Bruen was responsible for keeping the peace until then.

10: Van Buren established a ten hour work day on all federal projects by presidential order.

11: Van Buren did not make many legislative achievements other than this and.....

12: Van Buren attempted to combat the depression by trying to establish an Independent Treasury. This separated the Treasury and private banks.
