Ruby lived with her mom, dad, sister, and brother.
At age 4, the Bridges moved to New Orleans. At age 6 her parents received a call from the NAACP. Ruby was selected to take a test to become integrated into the New Orleans Public School System.
Ruby did well and was selected to attend a school for white children. Ruby's mom wanted her to go to a all-white school to get a better education.
White people didn't want blacks to go to their school because they thought blacks should not be treated as equal.
On November 14, 1960 federal marshals escorted Bridges on her first day at school. When Bridges got to school, white parents took their children away from the school. Teachers also refused to work with her.
Only one white woman, Barbara Henry worked with Ruby. They spent a whole year working together in a class all by themselves.
Bridges, who is now Ruby Bridges Hall, still lives in New Orleans. She is a full-time mother to her four sons.
