17: More about Mikey Dwyer and the book Mikey’s handicapping conditions are a result from oxygen deprivation at birth. He suffered damage to many areas of his brain. From baby on, he had many restrictions and complications but has learned to overcome them. He is now 20 years of age, and has accomplished more than ever expected. Mikey’s muscles, tendons, and ligaments are abnormal due to his brain damage but has learned to work hard during therapy to improve his performance. Mikey’s family and support team has highly impacted him as a person throughout his life and without them, Mikey would have not evolved into the fun loving young man that he has become. This book was created in order for early childhood readers to learn about children with disabilities. After reading the book, children develop the understanding that no matter what a person looks like or what their limitations may be, they can still become your friend. A child with disabilities can be restricted to do some of things that most children can do, but they always find their own way to enjoy the same thing others are doing. It is important for children at a young age to discover that everyone is different and unique in their own way. My personal experience with Mikey has changed me not only as a person but my outlook on life. I am blessed for each moment I get to spend with Mikey and the opportuniteis I get to learn from him. He has made my heart grow stronger and respect all individuals for who they are inside and out. I someday want all of my students to do the same and hopefully get the opportunity I had to find such a unique best friend.
