My journey started on a normal day when I was with my sheep. | Quester | I always loved traveling and exploring new places. That is why I became a shepherd. | SANTIAGO
One night I had a dream that a boy took me to the pyramids and told me I would find treasure there. I had that dream several times. | Stated Reason to go to Egypt: Get treasure
I believed that the dream was important, so I went to see a gypsy woman in Tarifa. She told me that my treasure was in Egypt and that when I found it I must give her 1/10th of it. | Place to go: EGYPT
As I was reading a book one day, an old man talked to me and asked me many questions. He told me that he would tell me how to get my treasure if I gave him 1/10th of my sheep. I agreed and he also gave me two stones called Urim and Thummim to help me follow the omens along my journey
I left for my treasurer and I arrived at Tangier. There, I met another boy who spoke Spanish and he told me he could guide me to my treasure. He said that we needed to buy two camels to get there, so I gave him my money. I got distracted while looking at a sword and soon I noticed that I was alone, the other boy had left me and he had my money. | Mainstreet in Tangier | Dangerous Road: Trial #1
I felt lost, sad and alone. I remembered that I still had Urim and Thummim. I asked them id the old man's blessing was still with me and they said yes.
I was forced to find work with a crystal merchant. He taught me many things and encouraged me to take risks. In a year, I had become a rich man.
I spent my savings to continue my journey towards my treasure. I joined a caravan. There, I met an English man who was studying to be an alchemist. He taught me about many things including the Elixir of Life, the Philosophers Stone, the Emerald Tablet and the Master Work.
The caravan stopped in Al-Fayoum to avoid the tribal wars that took place in that desert. There, I met my true love Fatima. | During a walk, I noticed an omen that told me that the oasis was going to be attacked. I warned the people and they were able to defend themselves. | Princess: FATIMA

5 Structural Elements of a Quest: | Quester: Santiago A place to go: Egypt (Pyramids) A STATED reason to go there: To get treasure. Challenges and trials: Getting robbed, turning in to wind, leaving Fatima and being beaten up at the pyramids. A REAL reason to go there: This is the only one that doesn't really fit the elements because he finds treasure in the end. Unless you think about how he learned a lot of things about himself and alchemy.
6 Main Characteristics of a Quest: A Knight: Santiago A Dangerous Road: the challenges he faces along the way. A Holy Grail: Soul of the World A dragon: There is not specifically a dragon in this story which could make the argument that it does not fit the characteristics of a quest. Evil knight: There is not one evil knight. The Arab soldiers who take Santiago and the alchemist and the men who beat Santiago up could be considered people trying to stop him but they are not considered an evil knight. In this way, The Alchemist does not contain the 6 characteristics of a quest. Princess: Fatima
