1: Texas has several important natural resources. Perhaps the most well known of these resources is oil. The first oil wells in Texas were found in the late 1800s in the southeast region of the state. In 2009, Texas produced almost 4.5 million barrels of oil per day.

3: Natural gas is found in deposits underground, usually near oil deposits. | Natural gas is a versatile resource. It is used to heat and cool homes, for lighting purposes, to power appliances, and to heat water. It is a cheaper, more efficient alternative to using only electricity in the home or business. Once natural gas is drilled, it most go to a refinery, like the one above, to be purified. It can then be readily used by businesses and families.
5: Another important Texas natural resource is the coal mining industry. Coal mining has come a long way since the caves first used when the industry began. Now, strip mining is the most common method. Using heavy-duty equipment, layers of ground are stripped away to reveal the coal underneath. Coal is used to power our nation. Some trains and ships are powered by coal. Coal can also be used in furnaces to heat buildings. Today, coal is mostly used to power factories. | Coal Mining Industry
6: SALT | Salt is mined in Texas. Grand Saline, Texas is home to the Morton Salt Company.
7: Gypsum | Gypsum is a mineral used to make plaster and drywall. It is mined in only 19 states in the U.S.
