5: Muckrakers | Muckrakers were investigative journalists who served as watchdogs to let society know the government's every move. They put an end to the Standard Oil's monopoly, established the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, and created the first child labor laws in the United States in 1916. Their reports exposed bribery and corruption that was present in society.
6: Goals of the Progressives | 1.They wanted people adopt the Progressive vision of middle class behavior. They aimed to depict Victorian family values. 2. They wanted to end class differences between the "have's" and the "have less" 3. They wanted more control over big businesses. 4. They wanted to segregate society into groups so that they could stabilize race relations.
8: Progressivism under Roosevelt | He was known as a trustbuster. During his presidency, 44 antitrusts were filed. His interest was in protecting the consumers, while limiting the power of big businesses.He ensured food was sanitary by passing acts that required packaging companies to have a certain standard. Roosevelt also promoted conservation of the nation's natural resources. He established the first wildlife reserves and national parks.
11: Progressivism during the Taft Presidency During his presidency, double the number of antitrusts were filed. He was a strong supporter of the sixteenth and seventeenth amendments. Towards the end of his term, he lost support from several republicans over disputes about tariffs. Many were opposed to Taft running for a second term.
12: Progressivism under Wilson | -Brought Democrats back to power since the Civil War -Underwood-Simmons Tariff lowered rates substantially for consumers. -Passed legislation in order to control unfair competition in interstate commerce - Many steps were taken during his presidency to reduce the number of immigrants allowed into the nation
15: Progressive Era Amendments | 16th Amendment- authorized congress to levy an income tax 17th Amendment-citizens had the power to elect senators 18th Amendment-prohibited the manufacture and sale of alcohol 19th Amendment- gave women the right to vote
16: Progressive Era Report Card | Successes -Women got the right to vote -Wildlife reserves and national parks were created -Railroad rates for consumers were reduced -Food standards were created so sanitation became less of an issue -Legislation was passed to minimize monopolies Failure -The needs of Africans and Native Americans were not recognized
