"Don't Quit" Unknown | When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest, if you must, but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out; Don't give up though the pace seems slow– You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than, It seems to a faint and faltering man, Often the struggler has given up, When he might have captured the victor's cup, And he learned too late when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out– The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far, So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit– It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
I | I chose this poem because right after reading the title, I knew that this would be a poem that I would like and enjoy. I think it tells what happens in life. I agree with what it says about all the ups and downs you will experience in life, I also feel that its good to know that times won't always be happy, Happiness is always followed by some sort of sadness or disappointment and vice-versa.
"A New Hope" Mattie J.T. Stepaneck | I need a hope... a new hope A hope that reaches for the stars, and that does not end in violence or wars. A hope that makes peace on our earth, and that does not create evil in the world. A hope that finds cure, for all diseases, and that does not make people hurt. In their bodies, In their hearts Or most of all, in their spirits. I need a hope... a new hope, A hope that inspires me to live, and to make all these things happen, So that the whole world can have A new hope, too.
This poem kind of describes the type of world, or maybe person, I would classify as being perfect. This is because their thoughts, not only bring good for themselves but also the world around them. It also seems more realistic to me than when people say they just hope for world peace, because this poem shows steps that a person can take, that may not create world peace, but it'll create something similar, maybe even better than world peace.
"Hope for Life's Journey" Mattie J.T. Stepaneck | Someday, I'd like to see what's down every road. I'd like to travel across Every highway and every byway. I'd like to explore Every mountain pass and every sandy trail. I'd like to follow Every straight route and every winding path. Someday, I'd like to understand From where all things come, And what to all things are destined. Someday, Even though I am sure of m lesson- That we are all hoping to the same place- I'd like to take the time To travel and explore and follow, So that I can really see and understand What's down every road.
Just like the author says in this poem, I too want to understand whats down every road. I want to experience everything in life. I want to understand that even the bad things happen for a reason, and they make you stronger. I want to learn to keep treading down the most difficult path. I want to learn to never give up and go above and beyond. I too want to know whats down every road.
"What Mystery Is This?" Javed Akhtar | There is a matter that has not come to my lips. It peeks through my eyes, It asks for words, Sometimes from you, sometimes from me To take its shape and come to my lips, To be embraced by my voice. But this matter Is a feeling, only a feeling Like a fragrance floating in the air, Fragrance, which has no voice That you know of, That I know of, It can't be hidden from the world What kind of mystery is this?
This is a poem from an Indian movie. The translation kind of causes it loose some of its depth. When I heard this for the first time, I really had to think about what it meant, because you can interpret it any way you want. I also think this describes everyone in one way or another. I believe that everyone has something, some feeling that they keep locked in, and they just have to figure out how to express it.
"You are Alive" Javed Akhtar | If you walk the world With eagerness in your heart You are alive If you walk the world With the light of dreams in your eyes You are alive Learn from the gusts of wind To be free Learn from the sea How to float on the waves Meet each and every moment Arms open wide Let your eyes see A new scene every minute If you walk the world With child-like curiosity in your heart You are alive If you walk the world With eagerness in your heart You are alive
This poem is also from an Indian Movie. This poem kind of describes the type of person I want to be. I want to learn to be free and not worry about what others think and live each moment, to its fullest potential. I want to live thinking about the present, not thinking about the past or awaiting the future. Just live in today, Just in this moment.
I wish Amrita Patil | You live your life without a worry in the world. You live your life expressing your beliefs and daring to do things that I wish I could do. You live you life not worrying of what others think, something seemingly impossible for me. You live your life not doubting any decision, I wish doubt wasn't my worst enemy. You live your life to the fullest, I wish, I wish I was I was like you because You live your life, without a worry in the world.
This poem describes me. It briefly shows my insecurities and it shows the type of person I want to be. Though I don't know anyone with all the qualities mentioned in the poem, most of my friends have at least a couple of those qualities which makes me want to be this way even more because I'm constantly around people who can live their lives without really worrying.
A Sprinkle of Light Amrita Patil | A sprinkle of light, shines in the darkness. A twinkle of sound, echoes in the loneliness. A snicker forms upon, the saddest face. A ray of hope emerges, from the depths of defeat.
I wrote this poem because I believe that you can always overcome any difficult times. When you do overcome these phases of life, happiness is sure to follow.
About the Author | Amrita Patil is currently a sophomore at Stillwater High School. A Ray of Sunshine is her first anthology. Patil wishes to incorporate all the life lessons given in these poems in her life.
