Slave trade - Page Text Content

S: Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade

1: As many as 60,000 Africans a year were forced in ships to make the middle passage. Many Africans did not survive the middle passage; as many as 2 to 3 million Africans may have died. Although slaves in Africa were treated fairly, in the US it was a different matter entirely. The African rulers who sold their own for guns either did not do their research, or did not care about their people.

2: At first, African slaves had been former criminals and they were put into slavery because of their horrible crimes. As the demand for slaves grew, they started to take innocent men, women, and children. | In Africa, slaves were treated well. They were not beaten, they were actually treated more like a family member. These innocent Africans were led aboard the ships and had a nasty trip. The ships were crammed full of slaves and each had maybe a foot and a-half to sit, stand, and walk. They had "toilets" which were tubes that held the waste. It very rarely was emptied so some children fell in and drowned. Other Africans died from the horrible smells and bacteria.

5: Imagine you are sitting in a field, a field you sit in every day and play games with the other children from your town. All of the sudden, some of the children start disappearing. You immediately run because your know that people have come to take you to the sea, and there will be no coming back once that happens. Out of no where two strong hands grab you, stuff a cloth in your mouth, and put a bag over your head. You are carried for a day before you are un-gagged and see the light of day. You have a restless night's sleep filled with fatigue. The next day is worse! You are being forced to march into an unknown creature called, ship. The rocking motion forces you, and many others, to throw up! As this happens, the whole ship fills with the stench from vomit, urine, and crap, You dream now of just being a slave in your own country, it would be much nicer than this! Your want to live has been blotted out by the few days you have survived on the ship. You starve yourself, but the captain wants you alive for profit, so they torture you to make you eat. It does not work, your will power is too much, but then they force feed you. You grow deadly ill from the diseases prowling around.
