When I was a little girl, around the age 4 or 5, my older sister would tell me that there is monsters in my closet that gives me bad dreams, or that if I eat my vegetables, I'll turn green.

Superstitions began a long time ago when our ancestors tried to explain events as best as they could with the knowledge they had. For example, let's say that a child, age of 3, got scared when it was thunder storming. A mom, or elder, would say something like,"The angels are bowling."

Another example of a superstition is that if you blow out your birthday candles with one blow, your wish will come true. If you use more than one blow, your wish won't come true.

Paraskevidekatriaphobia: Fear of Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th is a day of superstitions, fear, peril, and dangers. "The reasons why Friday came to be regarded as a day of bad luck have been distorted by the mists of time. From the early 19th century onward, examples abound of Friday's being considered a bad day for all sorts of ordinary tasks, from writing letters to conducting business and receiving medical treatment."

Wedding Superstition: The spouse who goes to sleep first on the wedding day will be the first one to die.

Triskaidekaphobes: Fear of the number 13

Mistletoe in the house protects it from thunder and lightning. It also cures many diseases, is an antidote to poison and brings good luck and fertility.
