2: Setting This story takes place mainly in the coastal town of La Paz, Mexico. Not many other cities come into the mix, however, they did visit a mountain above the city of La Paz.

3: Chapter 1 Summary In Chapter 1 of the Pearl by John Steinbeck all is normal with the family. The family is introduced as Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. Following is Juan Tomas Kino's brother.Everything is happening as usual in Kino's life and couldn't be better for him. Until they notice a figure above Coyotito's hanging box, a scorpion. With it slowly creeping down Kino makes a quick decision to get it away. He brushes it and it lands in Coyotito's hanging box and stings him,

4: Chapter 2 Summary In Chapter 2 Coyotito has already been stung by a scorpion and now Juana wants to see the Doctor. The Doctor is a rich, snobby, fat man who doesn't like Kino's people and also doesn't like to treat people without money so Kino is in a predicament. The Doctor refuses to treat Coyotito when they come to his door, even for the pearls that Kino offers for payment. So Kino decides to go get more pearls from the ocean. When he dives he gets many oysters and a very large one that he thinks he saw a pearl in. He is afraid to open it but when he does its massive.

5: Chapter 3 Summary Kino found the pearl of the world. It's a massive pearl that could secure Kino's financial future, however, the town has heard and news travels fast and before long everyone realizes what an amazing thing it would be if they had it. So they think maybe they should and Kino doesn't deserve it, and they're gonna take it from him no matter what it takes.

6: Chapter 4 Summary Kino is ready to sell the pearl in La Paz but when he gets to the buyers he realizes that they are low balling him and giving him bad prices so he decides to go to the capitol to sell his pearl.

7: Chapter 5 Summary Kino awakens in the night to Juana shuffling around in the house. She finds the pearl and runs to the ocean to throw it back in. Kino heard her and followed her and when he catches up... Strikes her and retrieves the pearl. Whilst leaving the scene of a beaten and battered Juana and heads back to the house only to be attacked again. The pearl falls from his grasp and rolls away. Kino kills the man attacking him, and Juana retrieves the pearl. However the house is being burnt down. So Juana runs in to go get Coyotito.

8: Chapter 6 Summary Kino hides in his brothers house until dark with his family. Everyone thinks he has already left the town or is dead. The canoe has been destroyed and now they have nothing but the pearl. They end up fleeing the town very stealthily. They go up the mountain and look for a place to hide in the day. They find a place to hide and a few hours go by and they see trackers coming up on them. Three two on foot and one on horseback. They didn't find them the first time but Kino knew they would be back. They move a little ways up the mountain.

9: When Juana is told to flee to the city she instead stays with Kino. Soon the trackers come back and Juana and Coyotito go into hiding in a cave. The trackers hear Coyotito cry out and they mistake him for a coyote. They shoot him and he dies. Kino then kills all three of the trackers and realizes the evil of the pearl. So he throws it back into the ocean.

10: Kino- a young Indian man who lives in La Paz, Mexico with his family and brother. The Doctor- a rich, snobby man who will not treat poor people

11: Juana- Kino's faithful wife mother of Coyotito Coyotito- Kino's son, he is only a few months old
