FC: The Scarlet Ibis By: James Hurst Presented by:Lizzie Newhouse
Main Characters Doodle - When he was born, he seemed to be all head, with a tiny body which was red and all shriveled like an old man's. He was an utter disappointment to the family. He was very weak, and wasn't nearly as successful as his big brother, who he had admired deeply. He had reached the point at which he could crawl but at the age of 3 years. When he crawled, he crawled backwards, like a doodlebug, thus how he got his name.
Main Characters Cont. Aunt Nicey - She had Delivered William Armstrong (Doodle). When everyone thought that she was going to die, she believed otherwise. Doodle's Dad - He had a coffin made for Doodle, because everyone thought he'd die.
Doodle's Brother - He taught Doodle to walk, and to do the things that many of his family members thought that his little brother couldn't do. He thought himself smart at things such a holding his breath, running, jumping, or climbing the vines in Old Woman's Swamp. But what he wanted most, was to have someone to race to Horsehead Landing, someone to box with, and someone to perch with in the top fork of the great pine behind the marn where across the fields and swamps you could see the sea.
Main Characters Cont. Doodle's Mom - She was upset that Doodle probably couldn't do the things that normal children could do, but she was happy that he was at least alive, and she was content with the fact that Doodle could just lay on the rubber matress surrounded by a white marquisette.
Plot A young boy is born, and seems very unhealthy. His family dedided to finally name him after he didn't die. They came up with Doodle because he crawled backwards like the doodlebug. Doodle's brother was embarassed by him because he couldn't walk, so he taught him to walk, as well as many other skills no one thought that he could develop because he was so weak.
Setting This story is set in the American South, and the majority of events take place at Old Woman Swamp. The time period is around 1918, the year World War I ended. There are refrences to battles fought far from its peaceful Southern setting.
Conflict Doodle was so weak that he couldn't even stand up. His brother, was embarrassed by this fact, so he decided when Doodle was 5 years old, he would teach him to walk. So every day, his brother would take him down to Old Woman Swamp, and heave him to his feet, and try to make him stand. But again, and again, Doodle kept falling down and it seemed that Doodle wouldn't stand up, let alone walk. But Doodle's brother kept at it for days and days and days, and it seemed that he was making him stand over a hundred times a day, but it was well worth it. One year later, on Doodle's sixth birthday, the two brothers had promised a most spectacualr suprise for the family. At breakfast on their chosen day, they made their Mom, Dad and Aunt turn around and promise not to peak. Doodle's brother helped him up, and when he was standing alone they were allowed to look. Doodle slowly walked over to his place at the table and sat down. His mother came over and started kissing and hugging him. Doodle told them all that his brother had helped him.
Conflict Doodle started to crawl, but showed no signs of walking. So his Dad had built him a go-cart that he could be pulled around in. At first his brother just pulled him around on the front porch, but soon enough Doodle wanted to be pulled around in the front yard. So whenever Doodle's brother grabbed his cap and started toward the door, Doodle would cry and ask to go. Even if his brother didn't want to take him, his mother would say, "Take your brother with you."
