FC: The History Of Spain By: Patrice

Ben was a little boy in the 5th century and his country of Spain was in Visigoth control. The Visigoths moved to Spain to expand the Roman Empire. Before the Visigoths, Ben was a Celt but was forced to become a Christian to save himself.

The Visigoths had been fighting amongst each other for the past few days. Ben's family lived near the Strait of Gibraltar. When he woke up the next morning, there was some intense fighting in the streets. "The Muslims have invaded Spain!" Ben yelled through the house.

Over the next year the fighting kept on going. These Visigoths were tough people. By the way, they were descendants of the ancient Roman warriors, but dressed like Vikings. Eventually they did lose.

The next day, a Muslim church (mosque) official came to Ben's house. He wanted his family to convert to Muslim if they wanted to.

The roads around Ben's city were very busy with supply trucks for the mosque in Cordoba, Spain. The Muslims made the city very nice, too. They put up paintings, built cool buildings, and played music everywhere. Ben's family also got to try new foods because trade was great due to the large Muslim empire.

Ben's biggest dream was to go to a school and then to university. Since the Muslims valued education so much, and had even built a university in Cario while they were in control, Ben knew they valued education. "My dreams have come true!" Ben screamed.

As the years passed (500 years and Ben is immortal), Ben's hopes to go university were shrinking. The Muslim rule was coming to an end in the early 1000's, because the kingdoms were shrinking and the remaining rulers were always fighting amongst themselves.

There was not always peace around Ben's house. Since the empire had spots where it was no longer connected, communication was difficult.

Once again there was fighting in the streets below him. Over the hills, he saw some unusually dressed men. They attacked in a new formation. "What is that?" shouted Ben. It was the new formation that made the Spanish Christians so successful during the time period called the Reconquista.

The Christians made groups of men with the same weapon. The Muslims still fought in straight lines. When the Christians attacked, the Muslims flew out of formation like flies. This made Ben laugh so hard he just about cried.

Once the Christians made their move, Ben was not safe outside for 407 years. They fought many battles, and there were 7 major battles. This movement was called The Reconquista.

Everyone was out in the streets getting ready for something. Ben had no idea what was going on. Then the streets filled with cheering as the newly married monarchs, Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon, walked down the street.

Ben was still a Muslim and didn't want to convert to Catholicism. He told the monarchs and their troops that he did convert, but really he hadn't. The people around him were spying on him and they did catch him once practicing his Muslim religion.

Ben was forced to sit in the spiky chair. To start off with, they stacked 5 big bricks on his lap. He had been balanced on the spikes, but with each brick, he sank further into the sharp points. The people around him were yelling things at him.

Finally he could understand what they were saying. They yelled, "You dirty Muslim, either you convert to Catholicism, leave the country, or just get killed."

Since Ben converted to Catholicism, his life was spared. Lots of people still disappeared from the streets, and many families were given three months to leave the country forever, or die.

The Inquisition lasted from 1480 to 1834. The monarchs made all Muslims pay an extra tax. This was revenge for the Muslims because the Christians had to pay a tax under Muslim rule. The Jews had to pay taxes no matter who was in control. This was used to get rid of any other religion so they wouldn't lose power. Ben died of old age.
