2: Romeo Romeo's progression throughout the story is from a romantic by the book to a passionate lover.

3: Juliet Juliet's progression throughout the story is from a childlike passive obedience to a determined lover of Romeo

4: Friar Lawrence Friar Lawrence is the sole religion of the play. He helps Romeo and Juliet, and is a main cause of the fate of the two.

5: Mercutio Mercutio is a character who is a scene stealer. He has a quick wit and a sharp mind, and unlike others blames all Montague's and Capulet's for his death.

6: Lord Capulet Juliet's' father, this man is enemy to Montague for unexplained reasons. He loves Juliet though not acquainted to her feelings.

7: Lady Capulet Juliet's mother, she is an ineffectual mother, relying on the nurse for help raising Juliet. she thinks fourteen (her age when she married) is the year her child should marry.

8: Lord Montague Romeo's father, bitter enemy of Capulet, he is deeply concerned about his sons' melancholy.

9: Lady Montague Romeo's mother, dies of grief when Romeo is exiled.
