Kate Dicamillo is a very genuine author who writes both children and adult books. She thinks of herself as a storyteller and is inspired from paying attention to the world around her.

Kate was born in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Clermont, FL. | She suffered from chronic pneumonia as a child and she believes that her time being sick contributed to her development as a writer, which gave her a better understanding of the world. She is a very strong-willed person. | Clermont, Florida

Some different things about Kate are that she is single, has no children, is an aunt, and loves to eat. | Also, Kate thinks of herself as a lucky person as she gets to tell adventurous stories for a living.

Kate has a Bachelor of Arts in English from graduating from the University of Florida in Gainesville. | University of Florida

She tends to write books about characters who struggle with deep and challenging obstacles. She is best known for children's books that confront themes of loss. | Books by Kate that include themes of loss include The Tale of Desperaux, which won the Newbery Medal in 2004 and Because of Winn-Dixie, which won the Newbery Honors Award in 2001. | Newbery Medal | Newbery Honors

Kate has a strong talent for presenting life's great sensitive questions and emotions to readers in all of her novels.

She started writing children's books at age 29. | Kate was inspired from working in the children's books department of a book warehouse. | She was surrounded by children's books everyday and fell in love with them.

As a child, Kate's parents separated after her father left when she was only six years old. | I think that the characters in her books displaying emotions of independence and loss relate to her childhood experience.

Also, some of Kate's books have been made into movies. | This includes her novels The Tale of Desperaux and Because of Winn-Dixie.

A fun fact about Because of Winn-Dixie is that when Kate wrote this book, Kate was in a stage of life for the first time without a dog since she grew up around dogs. So, she created her dream dog, Winn-Dixie.

More fun facts about Kate include that her real name is Katrina Elizabeth Dicamillo. | She was born on March 25, 1964. | And her zodiac sign is the Aries.

Additional true details about Kate's perception of writing is that she loves it when people tell her that her stories have a meaning to them, which Kate feels is the most rewarding part of being a writer. | Also, another thing is that she believes that if you want to become a writer, you have to open your mind and heart to the world.

Overall, Kate is a very heartfelt writer who makes stories that have deep meanings and purity to them. Kate currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is forty-eight years old. She is presently working on a new novel and continues to create amazing stories.

Books by Kate: | The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane | Because of Winn-Dixie | The Tale of Desperaux | The Mercy Watson series | The Magician's Elephant | The Tiger Rising

The book I read by Kate Dicamillo is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. It is about a china rabbit named Edward who is owned by a little girl named Abilene Tulane who loves him more than anything. Because of her very praising attitude towards Edward, it has made him a very selfish rabbit.

So, Edward's true story begins after the unexpected happens. This occurs while Edward is on vacation on a cruise with the Tulane family and in the blink of an eye, an unfortunate accident finds Edward falling overboard into the ocean, away from everything he's known and loved.

This astonishing misfortune leaves Edward in the ocean for a very long time until he is brought upon a fisherman. He is then passed along hand to hand to many different people and experiences. | From a little girl with pneumonia to a delightful old couple, Edward's selfish attitude slowly transforms from his many encounters with different people. These situations help Edward change his heart and understand the true meaning of his presence.

At the end of this heartwarming book, Edward surprisingly comes across some old friends he once knew long ago and discovers a meaning filled with purity and respect. Overall, this story shows the true fact that in time, all hearts can be transformed.
