FC: Dill | By Alexandria Meyers & Madeline Brady
Hi! My name is Charles Baker Harris, but you can call me Dill. I live in Meridian, Mississippi during the school year and visit my friends in Maycomb County, Alabama during the summer.
Summer is my favorite because I get to see my friends Jem and Scout. We play together every day! Spending time with my mom and step-dad ain't as much fun though. They pay no attention to me. To keep me happy they buy me toys and get mad at me when I don't play with them.
This is my best friend Scout Finch. We can do anything together and have an amazing time. Some day, I am going to marry her... She already said yes!
This is my other best friend, Jem Finch. He thinks he's too cool to play with me and Scout now, but we still hang out. When we were younger, we were always together! We used to not let Scout play because she was a girl. That really got her goat!
One day, Scout, Jem, and me went to the Tom Robinson trial. We sat up in the balcony with Reverend Sykes and all the other colored people. It was really crowded in there! Seeing the way they treated Tom made me really sad. I didn't want to cry in front of Jem and Scout, but I did and they had to take me outside. That's when I met Mr. Dolphus Raymond. Scout said he was an evil man, but I trusted him anyway. | He was the father to the mixed children and everyone in Maycomb County said he was a drunk. Turns out he isn't! He carries Coca-cola not beer! We asked him why he pretended to be a drunk and he said people would understand why he lived the way he did if he was a drunk. That seems strange but it kinda makes sense to me I guess. The Tom Robinson trial taught me that this world is not fair.
One time, I ran away from home because my parents didn't have time for me. I got all the way to Maycomb because the train driver is used to me riding by myself. Scout was so scared when she found me under her bed. She thought I was a snake! Miss Rachel was so mad! But she let me stay and didn't send me back to Meridian.
This is a letter that I wrote Scout to tell her about my new Dad in Meridian. I made sure to remind her that I was still planning on marrying her, and told her not to worry. I was gonna love her forever.
One day, me, Jem and Scout were going to find Boo Radley. Jem peeked in the window, but we heard somethin' and got scared. He ran away and got his pants caught on the Radley's fence. Then, when Atticus saw that he had only his underpants on, I told 'em that I won his pants in strip poker.
"I don't care one speck. It ain't right, somehow it ain't right to do 'em that way. Hasn't anybody got any business talkin' like that --- It just makes me sick."
