Trip to Rome 2010 - Page Text Content

 Calvin|Michelle|Tin|Mom|Dad | Next stop... ROME!

Seeing the Pope in the Eternal City!

A professional photographer took the magic picture--it was too crowded for the rest of the family to get any closer!

good eats | After meeting the Pope, we walked to eat our first real Italian meal nearby.

 Pepper-roni?!

 Traveling | byFOOT | a | resting their feet | byBUS | bySUBWAY | by

 The Trevi Fountain

Traveling the streets of Rome | Goofing off on the Spanish Steps!

 The Colosseum

The Colosseum & The Roman Forum

While waiting in line to see the village of St. Augustine...

The Roman Forum was beautiful with lots of different types of foliage.

Home & Hotel | "I like the free breakfast~it was like eating heaven with a fork and spoon!" | In addition to meeting the Pope, the Make A Wish Foundation also provided plentiful accommodations. There were two rooms, both with an equally great view of the streets below. | The huge shower was calming and quiet for me because I spent a lot of time in there.

The Colosseum at night was breathtaking. | We walked half an hour to eat at an underground pizzeria.

Our first time eating McDonald's in Italy! | Gelato and pizza right outside the Colosseum!

 The Castel Sant'Angelo

 Our Italian family!

The castle had a fantastic view of the city, especially of St. Peter's Basilica. | Trying to look down a centuries-old well.

 being silly!

Uh oh! Someone got stuck in a water trough! | Another piece to add to his expanding rock collection!

The Italian Make A Wish volunteers, Antonia and Elisa, were incredibly helpful when we got stuck at the airport. They pointed us to the best restaurants away from the tourist spots and guided us around the city.

Eating gelato, meeting strangers, having lunch on the Spanish Steps, learning the Italian Metro system, buying expensive groceries, walking on the old cobblestone roads the first Romans walked on, seeing the intricate architecture and the ancient cathedrals and especially meeting the Pope; It was all a once-in-a-lifetime experience, despite getting sick, getting lost, and taking trains in wrong directions. Immersing in different cultures taught us a lot and opened our eyes to a little bit more of the world around us. -Michelle Nguyen | Shaking hands with the Pope and having him bless our family was a moving experience for me because I have never gotten to do anything this special before! Being in Rome allowed me to see how contrasting our cultures are. The cars and houses are tiny, yet the cathedrals and historical landmarks are grand and complex. The food, culture, and customs place more of an emphasis on family and history. -Calvin Nguyen
