1: 50 Years 5/19/1962 to 5/19/2012

2: Catherine Clair Stas | Kaye was born on 1/19/1936 to Francis Elmer & Beatrice Blanche Stas. She grew up in and around Omaha with a few side trips to New Orleans and Hastings, NE. | May 1937 Age 1 1/2 years

3: Catherine Clair Stas | Her favorite childhood memory is playing at Cowles Lake with her cousins Chuck and Bob Tritz--they were like brothers to her. Also playing with her cousin JoAnne and spending the night in her big house in Dundee. | 8th Grade Age 13

4: Kaye's parents: Beatrice Blanche Chleborad-Stas & Francis Elmer Stas

8: Bernard James Kros | Bernie was born on 4/15/1935 to John & Anna Kros. He was the first of 4 boys. He grew up in South Omaha. His favorite childhood memories are playing baseball with St. Peter and Paul boys, fishing on Platte River with his Dad and brother Bob, playing hockey with L Street Vikings and ice skating with various school kids.

12: Bernie entered the military shortly after graduating high school at age 17. He initially enlisted in the Navy but quickly switched to the Air Force. He attended Syracuse University for 2 years studying the Russian languages. | Playing golf at St. Andrew's Links, Scotland. | memories

13: Bernie had many jobs prior to the Air Force & working in the insurance industry/owning Hansen Agency. Prior to college he was a mechanic (Acme Top&Body, mannequin/window dresser (Phillips Dept Store), loaded furniture and a caddy (Happy Hollow CC-6 years). In college he worked unloading Pepsi trucks, odd jobs at Syracuse Basketball Coliseum & worked in a liquor store. His ultimate job was being a Russian linguist in the military or as we like to say a spy!

15: Kaye & Bernie met at his cousin's (Betty Kros-Flynn) wedding July 30, 1960 (Kaye had worked with Betty). Kaye went to find an eligible fireman. The night they met at the wedding Kaye talked Bernie into taking her to a high end restaurant--Kay's in Benson. They had appetizers and drinks between the afternoon wedding and evening reception. Bernie had to run home between the dinner and the evening reception to get more money. Mom wondered who's nice car was in the driveway and it was Uncle Gene's. Bernie borrowed money from his brothers to help pay for the evening. That night he drove Kaye home & ran into her family's mailbox. Good thing he was going into insurance.

16: After they met at his cousin's wedding Bernie called several times but Kaye ignored his calls--she just wasn't sure about him. Bernie had almost given up (it was going to be his last call)...but Kaye changed her mind about him after her Aunt Agnes had had a little heart to heart with her and told her, "You should go date that nice South Omaha boy. Give him a chance." Luckily Kaye accepted. Bernie and Kaye's first official date was going to his parent's cabin on the Elkhorn river to see the cabin & meet his family.

18: Our Wedding Day | The wedding ceremony was held at St. Bernard's Catholic church and was officiated by Father Don Kros.

19: Bernie & Kaye were married on a beautiful spring day 5/19/1962.

30: Kaye & Bernie left immediately following their afternoon reception for their honeymoon. The trip was a gift from Kaye's parents to Honolulu & Kauai, HI. Kaye was | They met them at the airport and lavished them with flying rice and a rowdy sendoff. When they got on the plane, they were seated separately. Fortunately, a nice gentlemen offered to switch seats and said, "Because this should only happen once in a lifetime." For Bernie & Kaye, this was true. Congratulations 50 years later. | trying to be all sophisticated by changing into her travel trousseau but the wedding party had different plans

31: Honolulu & Kauai Hawaii

32: Our Honeymoon Humor | Kaye & Bernie enjoyed a wonderful Hawaiian honeymoon. They were trying to be good budgeters however, their first morning they decided to have a big breakfast at their hotel. When they wrapped up and went to pay, they realized they had just spent their entire budget. They ate at Jolly Rogers the rest of their honeymoon. | Kaye & Bernie stayed at the Halekulani. They stayed in the bungalows that are no longer around.

33: Their first island stay was Honolulu and next was Kauai. They had a limo scheduled to pick them up for the airport but they overslept. Kaye jumped out of bed, curlers in her hair grabbed their items and ran to the limo. However, when they reached the limo they realized that they did not have their tickets for the flight and had to run back and get them. Rumor has it that other passengers were not so pleased. Luckily, everyone made it on time, curlers and all.

34: Bernie and Kaye's first home was at 5118 North 108th Street. Kaye's parents gave them the land next door to their home. They moved in after their honeymoon in May 1962 and lived their for 9 years.

36: 610 Hillcrest Drive Blair, NE 68008

37: Their 2nd house in Blair Move in date: April 1, 1971 | A facelift was required after #4 (Jimmy) arrived. They added the second floor at that time. Kathy and John moved upstairs.

38: Bernie started working at Keenan Insurance shortly before they married. Their first house was on land next to Kaye's parents (another gift). 5118 108th Street. It was a 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath Ranch style house with a walkout basement. They lived there for 9 years before moving to Blair, NE, where Bernie had bought into Hansen Agency. In Omaha, they had their first 2 children. Blair bore the last 2. | 1977 ad in the Blair Pilot Tribune | March 12, 1967 Prior to having children, Bernie and Kaye showed Irish Setters. This pic is of Bernie receiving 1st place-Gun Dog.

47: Vacation were an important part of Kros family life (and now lore). Most summers we would head out on some type of adventure. We traveled the United States extensively. Many trips to common places such as Disneyworld, Disneyland, Yellowstone & Glacier National Park. But also traveled Nebraska with stops in Bayard, Ponca State Park & Ogallala, As we grew so did our borders, taking us to Canada & Mexico. Each trip has great memories and some trips bore legends. Here are a few of the greats legends in no certain order: 1. Getting hi-centered on the LA freeway 2. Leaving Kathy as collateral in a Canadian hospital and circling the block in an RV to get cash. 3. Little Jimmy slipping in oil during the California trip 4. Johnny's bug sprayed hair that had all of us gagging at the smell. 5. Hopping around in the station wagons. 6. The Chinese Collision at Epcot 7. Jim following the Bag Pipers (see pic other page) and being found by a Chinese family. 8. John getting "lost" in Jackson Hole, WY (Mom thinks he didn't want to be around the family--a little embarassed) 9. Snowmobiling in Steamboat 10. Getting pulled over by the cops in the gigantic GMC.
