WWII - Page Text Content

Before the US became involved in WWII the war was already fully being waged. WWII had started primarily because of how WWI had ended. Germany was still extremely bitter over the Treaty of Versailles and because of this it opened opportunities for fascist leaders. | The war began two days after German bombers and armored divisions moved into Poland. Britain and France had already proclaimed they would go to war if Germany attacked Poland and on September 3, 1939 they did.

Britain, France and the Soviet Union became known as the Allies or Allied Powers. The United States would later join them. Germany, Italy and Japan were known as the Axis Powers

The US was originally, remaining as neutral as possible. However, after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7 of 1941 they were no longer neutral. The US became officially involved in WWII on December 8, 1941.

When the United States entered World War II production increased dramatically. There was a huge demand for war supplies including weapons and vehicles. Therefore, there was a need for workers. The large increase in production, dropping unemployment rate and wage increase helped to end the depression and recreated a more stable economic state.

During WWII the government began to encourage women to take jobs. One of their posters in particular became an important symbol during that time. “Rosie the Riveter” was a female character dressed in blue overalls and a bandanna. With her picture would be a saying such as “We Can Do It” or a caption reading “I’m Proud...my husband wants me to do my part.” Rosie the Riveter became a symbol of proud, patriotic, female workers.

The weaponry of WWII was very expansive. During WWII there were a lot of different types of the same item. For example one could work with a field gun or an anti-tank gun. These looked more like cannons and not guns despite their name. Other weapons included rocket launchers, armored vehicles, tanks, grenades, machine guns, rifles, anti-aircraft guns, mortar, grenade launchers, flame throwers, cannons, various aircrafts and the atomic bomb.
