She will fill our lives with sunshine.... And our hearts with love. | Our Family Before Amelia~ Our family before Amelia consisted of Kaleena Marisa Smith and Tyler Darrell Edward Smith (plus two cats!). In addition to us, our family includes our many parents, stepparents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and friends. Kaleena works at the University of Washington and Tyler is an electrician. Less than a year after marriage, we started to get the inkling that we were ready for an addition to our family...
A new baby is like the beginning of all things-wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities. | Our Wonderful Discovery- Mama went to bed on a Friday night with a feeling in her heart that she was pregnant, but decided to wait until morning to take a pregnancy test. She woke up at 4 in the morning on Saturday, June 14th, 2009, and finally couldn't stand the anticipation. When she saw that the test was positive she was so excited and astonished, but she felt that she should take another test to be sure. She waited until 5 am and then went to the local QFC to buy another test, flagging down a surprised clerk in an aisle. When the second test was positive as well, she woke Dada up at last. He stared and stared at that test in disbelief. Later that day, Mama got her passport renewed, and the picture shows how happy she was. Then Mama and Dada went to Third Place Books for lunch, and Dada bought Mama the What to Expect When You're Expecting book. A new baby was on the way! | How We Found Out | Sharing the News - We spread the news the very next day, on Father's Day. All of the soon-to-be grandparents were thrilled to hear that they were going to become grandparents for the first time! | Passport Photo

She went through two big containers a week!

Second Ultrasound - Our second ultrasound was on September 30th at 20 weeks. We learned that we were expecting a beautiful baby girl! We were overjoyed and thought she had the cutest little nose in her pictures. | A Tiny Baby Foot!
28 Weeks | Growing Anticipation- We got increasingly excited as we felt Amelia's first kicks and watched Mama's belly continue to grow! We even felt her first hiccups.
"I see who I want to be, in my daughter's eyes."
 30 Weeks
Choosing a Name- Mama came up with the name Amelia after reading Vanity Fair, by William Makepeace Thackeray (also the nickname Emmy). Marisa is the middle name of both Mama and Ama.
"You are so precious to me, sweet as can be, baby of mine" | Baby Shower
THE NURSERY | Mama had fun decorating your ladybug themed room. Mama and Dada bought all of your furniture and accessories at BabiesRUs. We wallpapered your room together, but Mama was hopeless when she tried to put together your furniture, so Dada put together your crib, changing table and dresser. In the meantime, Mama went overboard shopping for baby clothes!
Eagerly Awaiting Amelia- In the last few weeks before Amelia's due date, our excitement continued to build. We were were ready to meet our little princess! Mama tried walking to start labor, walking all over the mall, but just ended up exhausted. She also tried eating spicy food, and that didn't work either!

First Impressions: We were immediately struck by how beautiful Amelia was. She had soft cheeks, downy hair, rosy lips, blue eyes, a tiny nose, and toes like pearls. Perfect from her head to her toes!
Birth Story Mama first started feeling contractions on February 17th at around noon. They increased gradually, and by the next morning, it was time to call the doctor. She had us come in around 11:00 am, and Mama was 4 cm dilated. We were sent to labor and delivery, where a nurse did an exam and declared we would be admitted. Mama's water broke (though she didn't notice right away) while she was trying out the hospital's jacuzzi tub. We had put a bunch of soothing lavender bath oil in the tub, but when we turned on the jets, the bubbles expanded and got all over everything, making Mama laugh in spite of her contractions. Not so soothing, but pretty funny. Waiting for labor to progress, we watched 'Friends' on the TV and Dada read Northanger Abbey out loud to Mama at her request. Amelia Marisa Smith was born on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 11:45 pm at Northwest Hospital in Seattle after about half an hour of pushing. Dada was in the room to offer support. Ama Marisa, Grandpa Marc, Tia Amanda, Grandpa Steve, and Aunt Caitlin were in the waiting room, and came in to see the new arrival as soon as she had been cleaned up. A steady stream of other family and friends continued to arrive the next day. Amelia had an Apgar score of 9.5 (the doctor said with a laugh that they only give 10s to the babies of pediatricians) and was perfect as could be. | 02/18/2009 | 11:45 pm | 19 3/4 in | 7 lb 10 oz | Famous February 18th Birthdays: Mary I of England (1516), Toni Morrison, author and Nobel Prize laureate (1931), Yoko Ono, celebrity (1933), John Hughes, filmmaker (1950), John Travolta, actor (1954), Vanna White, game show hostess (1957), Molly Ringwald, actress (1968)
