FC: Cormac McCarthy The Road | Project by Ryan Flamberg
This is an ash cloud. Many of these covered the area where I lived and traveled . | This picture shows a regular day while traveling on the road. The landscape was always bleak and foggy.
This is the shopping cart that held our few but vital belongings and the rare bit of extra food. | This is the wool jacket that kept me warm until the end of my long journey.
These are some of the items my son and I carried around in the shopping cart. He had to part with his favorite toy firetruck to make room for more important things, like food.
While on the road, we met many unsavory people who had starved so long that they had turned to cannibalism in order to survive. They were using fire to kill and cook their prey. | Not only did we have to contend with starvation and cold, but we had to deal with cannibals. To protect us, I brought a revolver along. I told my son to use it if by some terrible circumstance he was captured.
We came upon an abandoned gas station and salvaged what we could from the place. There was some oil that we could use for this lamp, as well as some thick blankets that helped to keep us warm in the cold, dark world.
My son and I traveled back to where we used to live, and there was a can of Coca-Cola there. He had never had any before, and was surprised by how bubbly it was. | My journey ended at the sea: the place we had be longing to reach for so long. But when we got there, the humanity I had been longing for did not exist.
