FC: The six elements of geography By: Matthew Day

I'm writing this journal for the single purpose of teaching whoever finds it the six elements of geography. So that maybe, someone won't make the mistakes I did and end up lost in a jungle, like me.

To the left is latitude and the bottom is longitude. Both of these are measured in degrees | The reason I'm lost is I hadn't told the pilot on my private plane the correct absolute location

This grid is made of two sets of imaginary lines. One set goes from the north pole to the south pole. These lines, called longitude, measure east to west. The other set of lines are latitude. Latitude are parallel to the equator. They measure north to south. | The first element is to know where you are going. Absolute location is the exact location of a place on the global grid of Earth and only one part of the first element.

The second part of the first element is relative location. Relative location is the location of a place in relation to another place. In other words, where a place is compared to where another place is.

On this map, Tennessee's relative location is south of Kentucky

Place- a specific space on earth with physical or human meaning. Region- a group of places with the same type of characteristics. Formal Region- a region defined by a common characteristic. Also known as a uniform region. Functional Region- a central place and the area around it connected by a system of transportation, like trains or roads. Perceptual Region- defined by images and feelings that people relate to it rather than actual facts about it. | Places and Regions

A church is a place because it has meaning to people. Antarctica is a formal region because it is defined as COld! A functional region is the ancient city of Tenochtitlan And everyone thinks deserts are hot, but at night, they can be very cold. thats why deserts are perceptual regions. | Tenochtitlan

Physical Systems The third element of geography that affects every person on Earth. | Physical systems are when Earth does something that shapes its surface. Like earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, or hurricane.

Human Systems This is the fourth element. The system of how humans affect the earth by settling it, forming societies, and migrating from place to place. | People also make the earth more diverse. They trade, buy, and sell goods and ideas all around the world.

Environment And Society This is the fifth element of geography. It is how people affect the environment and how the environment can affect people. People can clear or plant forests, build cities, and hunt animals. The environment can be a barrier to people going where they want, like mountain ranges and deserts.

The Uses of Geography Important information about all the planet's systems can be provided by geographers. | This information can help people plan for the future.

If people know if something bad is going to happen before it does, | Then they can prepare or evacuate before it happens.
