 A Long Way From Chicago

 Richard Peck Realistic Fiction

Grandma's house in the country close to St. Louis From 1929 to 1942

So many things happen in this book. Its about two kids that have to go to visit their grandma. Their grandma ended up being a mean old lady that makes them do a lot of work. After going there for so many years they began to like it. They got to go to ballroom dances and they got to fly in some air planes. After that they had been looking forward to go to their grandma's house.

The author's point was to entertain you about two kids visiting their grandma. It shows that even though you think something is boring doesn't really mean that it is boring. The idea of the story is to entertain you.

Joey Dowdel - Towards the beginning of the book he is a ten year old boy that didn't really like going to his grandma's house. After years of going he actually was looking forward to it. He still has a hard time there because he has to do all the chores. Mary Alice Dowdel - Mary Alice is Joey's little sister. She couldn't stand going to grandma's house either until it

was the last year to see her. She didn't have much to do because she was a girl so she just jumped rope every day. Grandma Dowdel - She was a tough and mean old lady. She wouldn't take any kind of nonsense in her house. After the years of the kids coming over she began to get more gentle.

Internal Conflict One of the internal conflicts was between grandma and Mrs Wilcox. Another one is between Joey and Mary Alice wanting to go to grandma's house. The conflict between Joey and Mary Alice was resolved by going to spend the summer there. The conflict between grandma and Mrs. Wilcox was never resolved.

External Conflict One of the external conflicts was when Joey needed two dollars to take driving lessons. Another one was when they got caught fishing on private property. When Joey needed two dollars his grandma worked out a deal with the mayor and when they got caught on private property she threatened to turn him in for driving drunk

ABOUT THE AUTHER Richard Peck was born in Decatur, Illinois. He has written over twenty different children books and has one two Edgar Allan Poe Award for best juvenile mystery. After his starting career in writing he moved to New York where he lives now.

Recommendation I suggest that you should read this book because it is a heart warming and funny book about two kids going to visit their grandma during the summer over ten years. Out of all the books that I have read, this is the best one.
