Dear Diary, My name is Annemarie Johansen, I have one sister Kirsti. She is very energetic but sweet and kind.I did have two sisters Kirsti and Lise. But Lise died in a car crash. My mama and papa are very nice to me, Kirsti and Ellen my best friend. She is Jewish but mama says we should not talk about other people’ religion. Ellen's mama and papa have a celebration of bringing in the new year in October. I think it is odd but it doesn't bother me when they want me to celebrate it with them. -Annemarie

Dear Diary, Today me,Ellen and Kirsti where racing home. When I got to the corner some guards yelled at me “halt”! They asked “why are you running”? It usually means you're in trouble when the guards stop you. Ellen and Kirsti were scared but I spoke up and told them we were having a race at school on Friday and we were practicing for the race. One guard said “okay”. He told Kirsti that he had a little girl like Kirsti and then he touched her hair. She got mad at him and yelled at him, “Don't touch my hair”! I excused Kirsti's behavior and we all went home but we never told our parents, not even Kirsti. - Annemarie

Dear Diary, Today I went to the button store to get a new button for Kirsti's jacket because Mama sent me.When I got to the store, I found that Mrs. Hirsch and her family were not there. I rung the bell but still no one answered. I looked inside and all that was left on the shelves was dust. I decided they were probably on vacation, but they didn't go to church so I wonder if they were Jewish like Ellen? When I went home to Mama I told her that no one was there and she was very confused. And then she asked “Are you sure”? I said there was no one there but an empty shop with nothing but dust collecting on the shelves. We were troubled over it for the rest of the night and we forgot the subject and looked for a button somewhere else. - Annemarie

Dear Diary, This week has been very odd for my whole family. Ellen is staying with us because her parents have gone somewhere with Peter (Lise’s fiancé). Father has been talking on the telephone with Uncle Henrik often. He's been asking Uncle Henrik if the weather has been good for fishing because Uncle is a fisherman. But Papa says the weather is always dark and gloomy when he tells me and Kirsti. It turns out we are going on a train with Ellen to visit Uncle Henrik's farm which is far away from her and also by the sea. When we got on the train, Ellen, me, Mama and Kirsti all had to fit in one row of seats. When a guard came over after we sat down, he asked us where we were going. Mama told him we were going to visit some family and he asked if we were visiting them for the new year. She said “of course not, it's only October”. She saved our lives with that because it was the Jewish new year and Ellen was Jewish. The guard tried to trick Mama, but she thought fast. We made it to Uncle Henrik's safely with blossom the cow mooing at us from behind the fence. She would give us our milk and butter that night but the butter was low because all of the soldier's took it to feed their men. We were finally at the end of that train adventure and we slept well with Kirsti's new friend, Thunder, the kitten! - Annemarie | - Annemarie

Dear Diary, My adventures have come to an end and I may never see Ellen again. Ellen and her family and some other Jewish people with them had to hide under Uncle Henrik's boat and ride to an island across from Germany. They will be safe on the island away from the guards who would have killed them if they stayed here. Today Kirsti, Mama, Papa and Thunder were all at home safely. Uncle Henrik is well but sad news has come in the mail. Peter was shot in Central Square because he was part of an alliance to help the Jewish get out and he was found along with some others. The letter was from some of his friends in the alliance. It turns out that Lise had been part of the alliance too and she was killed because the guards driving the other car purposefully crashed into her. Mama and Papa told me this sad news about Lise because I had been through so much with saving lives and getting past guards. This will be my last journal entry because I want to save it for when I am older and I can write in it again when the war is over. Farewell. - Your Friend, Annemarie

If I could meet the main character Annemarie, I would ask her many questions about how time was living during the war in Germany. I would ask her these questions because I do not live in a war zone during war time. I would also like to ask her “how is living with a little sister like Kirsti and living with your best friend”? I don't have a little sister because I’m the little sister in my family. I have an older sister. I would also ask her how it felt to have an older sister die. It sounds really sad. What I would like to do with Annemarie is play the doll game she and Ellen played and maybe Kirsti could play with us. I like the idea of cutting pictures out of magazines. I would also like to help her redecorate the Tivoli gardens.I would like to have a first-account with milking a cow because I liked the section in the book where they milked Blossom. This story was emotional at times but at other times it was actually very happy. I really enjoyed this Louis Lowry book and I would love to read another one of her tales. - Grace Harrison
