FC: Antojos | Julia Alvarez | English Project | Holly A. Ayrons

1: Author | The author, Julia Alvarez, was born in New York, however she was raised in the Dominican Republic where her father joined in on a group to overthrow the current leader of the country, who was a dictator. | The group was discovered and her family had to leave the country. They returned to the United State.

2: Due to the language difference, Ms. Alvarez found it easier to write about stuff than to socialize. | She went to college and learned about different writing skills. She wrote poetry and was awarded for some of her works. | She decided to try her hand at fiction stories which proved just as rewarding as her poetic works.

3: Some of her other famous works are: | "Homecoming" | "The Other Side" | "The Woman I Kept to Myself"

4: Plot | ~Main character Yolanda is driving through the north hills of the Dominican Republic, looking for guavas and peace of mind. ~Her family is not happy that she wants to go out on her own but they let her anyway. ~She stops at a cantina, meets an old woman and a young boy. ~The young boy will show her where guavas are. ~They drive to where the guavas are and pick plenty.

5: ~Yolanda gets a flat tire. ~Young boy goes back for help. ~Two men come out of the guava trees looking dangerous carrying machetes. ~Yolanda thinks she's going to be harmed. ~The men thinking she is a foreigner help her fix her flat tire. | ~She thanks them for their help. ~She meets up with the boy on the road, he is crying because he could not help her. ~She does not blame him and drops him off back at the cantina. ~She continues on her journey.

6: Yolanda driving through the north hills of the Dominican Republic to find her antojo (craving) which was guavas. | Meets a boy who takes her to the guavas | Yolanda gets a flat tire. | Two men show up looking like they're going to harm her. | The men help her fix her flat tire, not intending to harm her. | She gets back on the road to continue her journey. | Plot Diagram
