S: The harmful effects of cigarettes

FC: Cigarettes | By: Megan Lafferty

1: You might know that cigarettes are not very good for you but you probably don’t grasp the concept of how bad they actually are for you. Did you know that one in five Americans die every year from tobacco related issues. Society needs to see the harmful and negative effects that smoking cigarettes has on not only the smoker but the people around them and the environment.

2: Cigarettes should be made illegal. They are harmful to the people and the environment. An estimated 443,000 deaths occur annually in the United States due to cigarettes. They cause more deaths than deaths from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol us, vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. If the cigarette companies and the government know how harmful cigarettes are for people, they should make them illegal. ("CDC -Fact Sheet")

3: CDC placed cigarettes at #1 on the list for Worlds Most Addictive Substances, while heroin is 5th on the list. Heroin is a highly addictive and dangerous substance, yet cigarettes are more addictive? This does not make sense to me. Why legalize the most addictive substance in the world, they are deadly and cause cancer and many other diseases. Yet the government just tells America it is okay to smoke, don’t just ruin your body but put innocent people around you in harms way because of second-hand smoke. It is ridiculous (" 101 Smoking Facts")

4: Cigarettes contain more than 4000 ingredients other than tobacco, including 43 known carcinogenic compounds, and over 400 other toxins. Some of the harmful ingredients in cigarettes include Ammonia- house-hold cleaner Arsenic- rat poisons Butane- gas, used in lighter fluid Carbon monoxide- poisonous gas Cyanide- deadly poison DDT- banned insecticide Ethyl fluroate- causes liver damage in animals Lead- poisonous in high doses Formaldehyde- preserves dead specimens Methyl Isocyanate- accidentally released in Bhopal, India in 1984, it killed 200 people Polonium- cancer causing radioactice element ("What's in a Cigarette") All of these ingredients are deadly, cancer causing compounds, and they are putting them in cigarettes knowing how harmful they are and knowing the effects of them.

5: Secondhand smoking is a huge problem in the United States. An estimated 46,000 deaths occur annually in the US due to Heart Disease in nonsmokers who live with smokers, and an estimated 3400 Lung Cancer deaths in nonsmoking adults. The smokers have made a choice to put the harmful toxins in their body, but all the people who do not smoke and are around smokers (which everyone is unless you isolate yourself from society) are put in harms way and a lot of the times the don't even know. They are being exposed to deadly carcinogens whether they want to be or not. ("Secondhand Smoke")

6: Over 150 billion dollars is spent annually on health care cost because of cigarettes. we are already in debt, we could save a lot of money if we didn't have to worry about cigarette health care costs. ("101 Smoking Facts")
